Quick update, Wings acquire Fabbri from St. Louis for DeLaRose. Interesting, put your thoughts in the comments section.
36 shots on net will usually yield a better result than one goal. Henrik Lundqvist was exceptional. It may not be a comfort to the Wings who fell 5-1 to the New York Rangers. The second period, again, saw Detroit give up far too many goals. In the past two games, the Wings have given up 8 goals in the second period. Three tonight.
Special teams were not good. The Rangers scored twice on the power play, and once short handed. To be fair, Detroit was buzzing before McKegg broke away and scored on his own rebound. The last 6 minutes of the second period Were an inspired effort by Detroit. Filppula scored on a 2 on 1 with a nice feed from Athanasiou. After that, for the rest of the period, Detroit was flying. An untimely offside call shut down a nice sequence. However, it took Detroit being down 3-0 for them to find the effort that they need for 60 minutes.
After Detroit’s lone goal, you could see the team come alive. They are hungry for things to turn the right way. Right now, this team needs to look at that small segment and figure out what turned them around for those few minutes. The adrenaline was going, players were moving, passes were clicking. It was the most promising glimpse of the night. If the team could play that way to start a game, they could find themselves with some success.
Jimmy Howard was very good in the first period. That second period just seems to unravel the team right now. At some point, a shot of confidence is going to be needed. Yes, the team can create it’s own confidence by winning. However, this is a young group entering into a damaging series of losses. It feels like management will need to step in at some point.
In two days, Detroit will face Boston. A win tonight would have been a welcome respite. Boston is playing exceptionally well. They are a complete team. With the Vegas Golden Knights just 2 days after that, this could be a disastrous week for this club. The players and coaches will continue to address the disappointment of a young season, and Larkin will try to shoulder a tremendous amount of the blame. His passion and desire to make a positive impact in every game are admirable.
As of this morning, no answers seemed to be coming from Yzerman and co. It seems that it’s up to the players and coaches to figure this out. The thought of being last in the league and picking 4th overall (based on how the Wings have fared with the lottery) isn’t very comforting in November. This team still wants to have some level of success in season. It seems inevitable that something will have to give.
*Just minutes after posting NHL.com posted about the Red Wings trade for Fabbri. Yzerman is so quiet behind the scenes, I never saw this coming.
Thank you to everyone who stops by to read and comment. Keep them coming!
