Summary: The game stayed far too close on the scoreboard as Detroit was tied 2-2 with Carolina but didn’t get their 10th shot of the game until nearly 7 minutes into the 3rd period. Overpassing, for sure, but full marks to the ‘Canes for just outplaying Detroit and limiting the opportunities. Detroit had fallen back into a wild card spot and needs to put up a solid effort against Tampa Bay. This game just didn’t have a lot of flow from the top lines and being outshot 30-12 just leaves a bad taste all around (although that may be the Coke Zero. I didn’t read the label at the store).
Kostin’s opening tally was an odd trickle in goal and Carolina responded quickly. That quick response felt like a dagger shot. Detroit wasn’t going to be able to survive on high shooting percentage and Lyon closing the door tonight. To the goalie’s credit, he kept them in well into the third. Compher’s goal on the power play was a beauty, but far too many chances were lost with poor decision making and a Carolina team that just looked hungrier to get on the pucks.
Detroit will catch Tampa on the second game of a back to back and as long as they can avoid the “4th period momentum… by the Lightning the Wings have fared better in the Yzerman era against the bolts. It’s tough to see a good point streak end but the team just didn’t seem to be there for this one. Carolina is a team that can bring it and Svechnikov is heating up at the right time.
The head coach in Brind’amour still looks like he can put more wheels on the bench press than most (if not all) of the team and his compete and expectation levels are high. Honestly, the type of structure he runs would be a welcome shift in Detroit. There seems to be far too much searching for the perfect shot and not enough traffic and interference at times. The team won’t be happy with this one and have a day to chew it over. Let me know your thoughts as Detroit faces a tough few weeks to try and stay in the playoff picture.
Detroit First Period goals:
At 2:27 Sprong found Veleno with an exit pass out of the D zone. Veleno got the puck to Klim Kostin who shot the puck from his off wing and it trickled in. Less than a minute later Carolina’s Martinook tipped in a tying goal. 1-1

Detroit Red Wings Second Period goals:
With 42 seconds left, on the power play, Gostisbehere broke up a 3 man rush by Carolina and got the puck to Larkin who found himself in a 2 on a with Compher. Compher ripped a beauty to tie the score at 2. Brind’amour none to happy with the penalty, and honestly still looks like he could play the game. that was just Detroit’s 8th shot on net. Carolina collapses beautifully in the D zone and keeps pucks away from the net very well. Credit where it’s due.
