49 years ago today, 3 very big names were inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame; “Mister Hockey… Gordie Howe and 2 important players in the Habs history; “Le Gros Bill… Jean Béliveau and Bernard “Boom-Boom… Geoffrion. Not only was it a spectacular class, but both Howe and Béliveau had just retired, considering their body of work, the selection committee decided to waive the usually mandatory 3-year waiting period. An honor that had only been bestowed on 4 players before then: Dit Clapper, Maurice Richard, Ted Lindsay and Red Kelly. Since that day, the waiting period was only waived 3 times; for Bobby Orr in 1979, Mario Lemieux in 1997 (after his first retirement) and Wayne Gretzky in 1999.
On induction night in 1972, Béliveau and his wife Elise were nowhere to be seen as they were in Germany attending the Olympics with tickets given to them by the Montreal Canadiens’ organization as a retirement present. Beliveau would go on to win 7 more cups in his role as vice-president and has since left this world, you can’t see him behind the Canadiens’ bench at the Bell Centre anymore, but you can definitely see his wife, who has become the first lady of hockey in Montreal and is an inspiration to players and fans alike.

Il y a 49 ans aujourd’hui, 3 très grands noms ont été intronisé au Temple de la renommée du Hockey ; “Monsieur Hockey… Gordie Howe et 2 joueurs importants dans l’histoire du CH ; “Le Gros Bill… Jean Béliveau et Bernard “Boom-Boom… Geoffrion. Non seulement s’agissait-il d’une classe d’élue spectaculaire, mais Howe et Béliveau venait tout juste de prendre leur retraite, et considérant l’étoffe des 2 joueurs, le comité de sélection avait décidé de lever l’attente de 3 ans normalement obligatoire avant l’introduction au Temple. Avant ce jour, seulement 4 joueurs avaient été intronisé au Temple à la première occasion ; Dit Clapper, Maurice Richard, Ted Lindsay et Red Kelly. Depuis, cette période d’attente a été levée à 3 reprises ; pour Bobby Orr en 1979, Mario Lemieux en 1997 (après sa première retraite) et Wayne Gretzky en 1999.
Lors de la soirée d’intronisation en 1972, Béliveau et sa femme à‰lise brillaient par leur absence puisqu’ils étaient aux Jeux Olympiques de Munich grâce aux billets que le CH avait offert à Béliveau pour sa retraite. Dans un rôle de vice-président, Béliveau allait gagner 7 Coupes Stanley de plus avec le CH et il n’est maintenant plus de ce monde, on ne le voit plus derrière le banc des Habs au Centre Bell, mais on voit toujours sa femme, qui est devenue la première dame du hockey à Montréal et est une source d’inspiration tant pour les joueurs que pour les fans.
