On the eve of another match against Ottawa, Ducharme elected to go easy on his guys and not make them skate. Instead, they all came to Brossard for an off-ice practice which included video session. With the crazy schedule they have ahead of them, expect the Habs to resort to this kind of practice more and more in the future.
The very first question which was asked to the head coach today was when Eric Staal would be available and when he’d be in uniform. The newly acquired centre will have finished his quarantine on Sunday but the team has a scheduled day off before playing on Monday night against the Oilers.
While the team will be off Sunday, Staal will be allowed to skate if he wants to and Ducharme added that he could be in the line-up on Monday even though he won’t have had a full practice with the team before then. Ducharme actually laughed and said: “If we wait until we’ve had a full practice before bringing him in, it could be long…. When pressed for more information, he added: “Alright, he should be in the line-up Monday….
The rookie coach wouldn’t say who would make way for Staal, simply stating that there’s another game to be played before he has to make his decision, but if you ask me, Frolik should be the one to make way. Since the trade, it looks like a fire has been lit under Jake Evans, Arturri Lehkonen and Paul Byron. All 3 look like they’ve turned up their intensity a few notches and have no intention of giving up their spot in the line-up.
Frolik hasn’t been bad, he’s done a pretty good job to be fair, but I believe the Habs will prefer betting on the players who have seen more action. Once Toffoli gets the all-clear though, the decision will be tougher. I do believe the way players perform tomorrow night will have a big impact.
Right now, I think Lehkonen starts with one strike after taking a pointless penalty in the offensive zone last night which cost Jake Allen his shutout. I know, he had a goal and an assist the game before, but hockey is a cruel world, you’re only as good as your latest performance, and both Byron and Evans outplayed him on Thursday night.
Of course, things could change before Monday…the trade deadline is now 10 days away and it’s very likely that Marc Bergevin is still working the phone to try and improve his team one last time before the Spring dance. In a perfect world, the GM would find a taker for Paul Byron’s $3.4M contract which runs for another 2 seasons, but that seems unlikely… Today, the team announced the signing of a depth defenseman for the Rocket for a year (2021-2022); Corey Schueneman.

Le joueur de centre nouvellement acquis aura terminé sa quarantaine dimanche, mais l’équipe à un jour de congé prévu avant de jouer contre les Oilers lundi.
Bien que ses coéquipiers soient en congé dimanche, Staal pourra alors patiner s’il le veut et Ducharme a ajouté qu’il pourrait être de la formation lundi et ce, même s’il n’aura pas pris part à un entraînement complet préalablement. Le pilote a d’ailleurs ri en disant: « Si on attend qu’il ait pris part à un entraînement complet avant de l’intégrer, ça pourrait être long. » Quand le journaliste a renchéri, il a finalement ajouté: « Bon, oui, il devrait être en uniforme lundi. »
L’entraîneur recrue n’a pas voulu révéler qui lui cédera sa place dans l’alignement, ajoutant simplement qu’il y a un autre match à jouer avant qu’il doive prendre sa décision, mais si c’était ma décision, c’est Frolik qui serait retranché. Depuis l’échange, on dirait qu’un feu a été allumé sous Jake Evans, Arturri Lehkonen et Paul Byron. Tous les 3 donnent l’impression d’avoir augmenté leur niveau d’intensité de quelques degrés et qu’ils n’ont pas l’intention d’abandonner leur place dans l’alignement.
Frolik n’a pas été mauvais, en fait, il s’en est plutôt bien tire, mais je crois que les Habs préféreront y aller avec les joueurs qui ont vu plus d’action. Une fois que Toffoli sera prêt à renouer avec l’action par contre, la décision sera plus difficile. Je crois sincèrement que la performance des joueurs demain soir pèsera lourd dans la balance.
Pour l’instant, je crois que Lehkonen part avec une prise après avoir pris une punition inutile en zone offensive dans les dernières minutes du match et avoir coà»té son jeu blanc à Jake Allen. Je sais, il avait connu une soirée de 2 points la veille, mais le monde du hockey est cruel, et tu n’es qu’aussi bon que ta plus récente performance, et tant Byron qu’Evans lui ont été supérieur jeudi soir.
Bien sà»r, les choses pourraient changer d’ici lundi… la date limite des transactions n’est que dans 10 jours et c’est fort probable que Marc Bergevin fait des appels pour chercher à améliorer son équipe une fois de plus avant la danse du printemps. Dans un monde parfait, le DG réussirait à trouver une équipe intéressée à Paul Byron et à son contrat de 3.4 M$ qui compte encore 2 autres saisons, mais ça semble improbable…Aujourd’hui, l’équipe a annoncé la signature pour un an (2021-2022) d’un défenseur de profondeur pour le Rocket; Corey Schueneman.
