Blackhawks Notebook
Blackhawks goalie Kevin Lankinen has allowed at least 4 goals in 5 of his last 6 starts.
— Phillip Thompson (@_phil_thompson) March 10, 2022
"When he's on his game, he's a good goaltender," Derek King said. "A lot of times, with his injuries and everything ... he played well, we just didn't play well in front of him."
Not necessarily. Lankinen's mediocre performance for much of 2021-22 isn't exactly inspiring. The team defense isn't doing him any favors but he's not helping himself either. In last night's game specifically, he wasn't soaking in pucks and gave up way too many rebound chances to the Bruins. His poise has been fading.
Yet, what if Marc-Andre Fleury is one and done in Chicago and the Hawks part ways with Lankinen? Soderblom is far from NHL ready needing another full season as an AHL starter to be a viable tender at the highest level. Collin Delia and Cale Morris aren't the answer either. A trade deadline and/or free agent pickup may be in the cards.

Hogs on the Move: #Blackhawks activate Reese Johnson from long-term IR and assign him to Rockfordhttps://t.co/2HObOtlhZA
— Rockford IceHogs (@goicehogs) March 10, 2022
Johnson isn't going to set the world on fire with goals in the NHL but he is a reliable secondary scorer in the AHL. Similar to Drake Caggiula when he was with the Hawks, Johnson can play up and down the lineup for the Hogs while also capable of playing center or wing. He's strong on draws and brings a lot of sandpaper.
This weekend the Hogs have a pair of games with one this evening in Milwaukee to face the Admirals. Then the Hogs head eastbound on the 90 to Cleveland to face the Monsters for a mini series with matches on Sunday and Tuesday. As of today, the Hogs are sitting in the 11th spot in the AHL Western Conference.

Just some wild spitballing here but what if the Hawks are willing to take one of the massive defenseman contracts off the books for the Sharks. Erik Karlsson's deal is the longest and most expensive so not worth absorbing. Brent Burns is still productive in San Jose. That leaves Marc-Edouard Vlasic who has 4 years left at $7M AAV.
Marc-Edouard is cousins with Hawks D prospect Alex Vlasic. If this was even remotely a possibility, the Hawks should gain back a 1st round pick and high-end prospect not named William Eklund (2021 7th overall). The Sharks aren't giving him up. Instead, look at 2020 draft picks Ozzy Wiesblatt, Thomas Bordeleau, or Tristen Robins.
If trading to take on another team's big contract is a primary factor, the Kings may not be a viable trade partner as their largest contracts are ones they'd likely retain or ones that expire this summer. In the event, though, that the Kings do want to unload a hefty contract, then ask back a 1st rounder and a prospect like Alex Turcotte.

Trade Rumors
Part of their marketplace due diligence, the Leafs checked in with Chicago on Fleury. Don't believe Toronto is on Fleury's preferred destination list... More details here in Insider Trading â¤µï¸ https://t.co/coZ4Cf0O7r
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) March 10, 2022
It's already confirmed that Fleury wouldn't agree to a trade to Washington. Now, according to Pierre LeBrun from TSN, Fleury may not be amenable to going to Toronto either. The latest scuttlebutt has been that Fleury may be content with staying put in Chicago and, again, maybe re-sign for another season.
