Well that wasn’t so bad. The Penguins actually looked like an OK hockey team on the second half of their back to back with Edmonton and Calgary. Pittsburgh earned three out of a four possible points after losing in overtime.
It looked like Pittsburgh wasn’t going to earn any points when Calgary’s Sean Monahan (actually Brian Dumoulin’s skate) was able to score with about four minutes left in the game. With the extra attacker the Penguins tied the game with 1:12 left. Just like the night before in Edmonton it was Kris Letang getting a shot to the net and Patric Hornqvist doing his thing in front of the net. Incredibly basic stuff, but it works. Letang has done a nice job of getting more pucks through instead of deferring to others.
Overtime had its moments, but the Flames were able to turn a wonky sequence by Olli Maatta into victory.
Maatta passed the puck back to Tristan Jarry as a Flame was bearing down on him and put Jarry in a weird spot. He tried to fly a pass out to Sid (who can blame him), but it bounced and the puck was quickly transitioned back into the Penguins zone and Matthew Tkachuk made a nice dish pass over to Mark Giordano who placed the puck in the upper glove side
It was a nice play.
Tristan Jarry stopped 32 out of a possible 34 shots and finished with a .941 save percentage. This was one of the few times that a goalie not named Matt Murray has given the Penguins a real quality start. Jarry was very good, Mike Smith was just better. Smith saw 44 shots and stopped 43. It was a good effort by the Penguins. These things happen.
Up next the Penguins will face the Vancouver Canucks on Hockey Night in Canada.
