Let’s start with the Caufield news, his Wisconsin Badgers lost their championship game 6-4 to the Minnesota Gophers. Does this mean that Caufield’s season is over? Not just yet. On March 26 and 27, the Badgers will take part in their regional bracket in the hope of getting access to the Frozen Four. Should they lose during that weekend, they’ll be done. If they win, they’ll go on to the Frozen Four in which the country’s top 4 teams battle it out for the title from April 8th to April 10th. So April 10th is the latest Caufield could be free to sign a professional contract with the Canadiens.
That doesn’t mean he’d make the jump to the NHL right away, he might best be serve by a stay in Laval, but that will be decided in time. Furthermore, say he signs on April 10th, he would only be available after his 14-day quarantine which would mean April 25th. By then, the Habs would have about 7 games left and might just be in the battle of their life for a playoffs spot.
Clearly, Bergevin has made up his mind that Caufield is ready to turn pro, but what will happen to him will be dictated by the circumstance. The quarantine, the cap space and the situation the team will be in by then. One thing is for sure though, his tenure at Wisconsin will be over in the next few weeks.
Unsurprisingly, the bulk of the questions submitted to Marc Bergevin yesterday was about his intentions with trade deadline day approaching. The GM said about 312 times (and I’m barely exaggerating) that money was tight and that making trades wouldn’t be easy. The cap relief many believed was coming by putting Ben Chiarot on the long term injured reserve might not be coming.
Why? Well, Bergevin hopes that Chiarot’s absence will be closer to 6 weeks than 8 weeks and that he’ll be back before the end of the season. Consequently, Bergevin states the need created by his absence will be filled internally. That being said, the GM is hardly one to show his hand, he much prefers holding his card tightly to his chest and he was never going to say publicly that he’s desperate for a defenseman.
Furthermore, he once again said that his expectations are high for his team so it’s hard to imagine that he’ll stay completely put and not improve his roster at all. We’ve been used to seeing some movement at the deadline, even if it’s just depth moves. I’m highly skeptical that in a year in which he says he wants his team to go deep, he’ll just sit on his hands.
As well as talking about Caufield, he also mentioned Jordan Harris and the fact that he’s getting ready to turn pro as well, simply saying that they have had internal discussions about him.
Finally, tonight, the Canadiens will face the Winnipeg Jets at 9:00 PM before heading back to Montreal for a series of 6 home games. The morning skate is currently taking place and we don’t know yet what the line-up will look like (although Carey Price is doing the starter’s routine), but there is still a chance that Byron will be in since he once again cleared waivers today.

Commençons par les nouvelles se rapportant à Caufield, ses Badgers du Wisconsin ont perdu leur match de championnat hier face aux Gophers du Minnesota par la marque de 6-4. Est-ce que cela signifie que la saison de Caufield est terminée? Pas encore. Les 26 et 27 mars prochain, les Badgers prendront part à la compétition régional pouvant leur donner accès au Frozen Four. S’ils perdent pendant ce weekend, Caufield sera libre comme l’air. Par contre, s’ils l’emportent, ils seront du Frozen Four du 8 au 10 avril dans lequel les 4 meilleures équipes au pays se disputent le titre national. Donc, au plus tard, c’est le 10 avril que Caufield pourrait signer un contrat professionnel avec le CH.
Cela ne signifie pas qu’il fera le saut dans la LNH automatiquement, il sera peut-être dans son meilleur intérêt de faire un séjour dans la ligue américaine avec le Rocket, la décision viendra éventuellement. De plus, s’il paraphe un contrat le 10 avril, il ne sera disponible qu’après avoir servi sa quarantaine ce qui voudrait dire vers le 25 avril. à ce moment, les Habs auraient environ 7 matchs à jouer en saison régulière et il se pourrait fort bien qu’ils soient dans un combat à finir pour une place en séries.
Clairement, Bergevin a décidé que Caufield est prêt à passer au niveau professionnel, mais ce qui lui arrivera dépendra des circonstances. La quarantaine, l’espace sous le plafond salarial et la situation dans laquelle se trouvera l’équipe d’ici là . Une chose est certaine par contre, le stage universitaire de Caufield tire à sa fin.
De manière prévisible, la majorité des questions qui ont été soumises à Marc Bergevin portaient sur ses attentions alors que la date limite des transactions approche à grands pas. Le DG a dit environ 312 fois (et j’exagère à peine) que son budget était très serré et que de faire une transaction ne serait pas chose facile. L’espace sous le plafond que l’on croyait voir se pointer à l’horizon en raison de la blessure de Chiarot pourrait ne pas se réaliser.
Pourquoi? Et bien Bergevin espère que la durée de l’absence de Chiarot sera plus près de 6 semaines que de 8 et qu’il sera donc de retour avant la fin de la saison. Conséquement, Bergevin a dit que le besoin créé par sa blessure devra être comblé à l’interne. Ceci étant dit, ce n’est pas le genre de Bergevin de jouer cartes sur table, il préfère de loin tenir son jeu caché et il n’allait jamais dire publiquement qu’il est désespérément à la recherche d’un défenseur.
De plus, il a une fois de plus réitéré que ses attentes pour son équipe sont élevées, il devient alors difficile de croire qu’il restera complétement inactif et n’améliorera pas son alignement du tout. Il nous a habitué à bouger à la date limite, même lorsque ce n’était que des acquisitions de profondeurs. Je suis extrêmement sceptique à l’idée qu’il restera les bras croisés.
En plus de mentionner Cole Caufield, il a également parlé de Jordan Harris et du fait qu’il s’approche des ligues professionnelles de hockey. Toutefois, il s’est limité à dire que des discussions avaient eu lieu à l’interne à son propos.
Finalement, ce soir, les Canadiens affronteront les Jets de Winnipeg à 9:00 PM avant de retourner à Montréal pour une série de 6 matchs à domicile. L’entraînement matinal a présentement lieu et on ne sait pas encore de quoi l’alignement aura l’air (quoique c’est Carey Price qui fait la routine du partant), mais il y a encore des chances que Paul Byron en fasse parti n’ayant pas été réclamé au ballotage pour une deuxième fois.
