The only vacancy for general manager in the NHL belongs to the Columbus Blue Jackets, the newest team with an outdoor game effective March 1st, 2025. One of the youngest and most unsuccessful franchises in hockey possesses the opportunity of growth for any new manager coming in to replace the departed Jarmo Kekalainen of 11 years.
There are a lot of candidates that are out there, some with experience and pedigree, others that are inexperienced.
Potential Candidates
Jeff Gorton - Pres of Hockey Ops (MTL)
This was floated by Darren Dreger and it’s a compelling idea that makes no logical since to the future of the Canadiens or rid of one of the brightest men in hockey. He helped build the Rangers’ core to what it is now, and is doing the same in Montreal.
Peter Chiarelli - former manager of Boston and Edmonton

Interim President John Davidson
I think his time is running very thin. Davidson knows it. After Babcock, they’re all doomed.
Brandon Dubinsky
Does he have an interest in managing? Great tweet earlier, former player, knows the city. But the skillset is a different story.
Mike Futa (LAK)
Always been near the the top spot and could be in contention.
Sean Burke (VGK)
Always a dark horse around these management spots, though best known as a goaltender whisperer. Could go a long way with the tandem locked up longer term.
Marc Bergervin (LAK)
Was a part of the Hawks 2010 run and managed the Habs to the Cup Finals during COVID.
Chris Clark (CLE)
Manages the minor leagues with Monsters. Could be a promotion and money savings.
Josh Flynn (AGM)
Has been the assistant since 2008.
Basil McRae (AGM)
Has been the assistant since 2016.
Mathieu Darche (TBL)
Was near the top of the previous manager jobs and part of the back to back winners.
Gregory Campbell (FLA)
Former Blue Jacket and has hockey family name.
Jason Boterill (SEA)
Former Sabers manager and assistant with Pittsburgh.
Dale Hunter (OHL)
Former Leafs coach and connected to London. Knows McRae.
Laurence Gilman (TOR)
Been around a strong core with the Leafs.
Shawn Horcoff (DET)
Part of the Yzerplan and is seeing the build in Detroit like Yzerman did in Tampa.
Eric Tulsky (CAR)
Another strong candidate with the manager jobs.
Chris MacFarland (COL)
Won the cup with Colorado and knows the Blue Jackets system from his time around Springfield and Cleveland.
Jamie Pusher (TBL)
Back to back champs with Tampa.
Dave MacKinnon (NJD)
Devils assistant and Utica Comets manager.
