Lyon’s 29 save shutout boosts Detroit to 3-0 win over Flyers (Red Wings)

Summary: The shots were 29-17 and the score was 3-0. Just looking at the numbers doesn’t tell the story of a surprisingly good Red Wings Defensive effort. Detroit closed in on rushes and had takeaways and kept shooters to the outside. It was not the power play that led Detroit to victory. Two even strength and one short handed goal that included Copp’s 100th career, Larkin’s 20th and 199th career and 10th game added to his current point streak. A lot of good things happened.

Things got physical as Kostin dropped the gloves with Deslauries and by the end of the game the refs were playing “toss across… to avoid any more scuffles. With 19 seconds left and on the power play, Seider kept the puck in his own zone and just let the clock run out. This was a mature approach, and allowed the game to wind down. Detroit could easily have been in a net front brawl if they’d gone for number 4 on the night.

Philly is superb at blocking shots and there is no shortage of grit to their game. Tortorella has made adjustments to his style but his teams still get in front of pucks. Larkin’s goal, Seider’s first in a long time and Copp’s short handed tally all happened with strange lapses or a bizarre deflection in Seider’s case and this win reinforces Lyon’s value to the team. There was a conversation on the broadcast about Husso’s return, personally that is a non conversation.

This is a very good win that saw an almost flipped script from the Dallas game. The second period was where the game was won and lost but this time Detroit was on the winning side. Sprong passed up multiple chances to shoot that I hope lead to an encouragement by the team and staff to go for it more often. Detroit needs to do a lot of winning to close out the season and play in the post season. The guesstimate is 94 points needed to get into the playoff race.

Another challenge comes as Detroit will face last year’s cup champions as they face Vegas next. There is no let up right now in the schedule and the team seems to be responding. Kudos to Detroit and a tip of the hat to Lyon for making this one add to the plus column.

Detroit Red Wings Second Period goals:

At 1:37 into the second, Larkin extended his point streak to 10 and scored his 20th of the season after a rebound found its way directly to his stick after a shot by Raymond. Larkin now has 199 career goals. 1-0 DET

At 7:15 Seider scored a “bumper shot… after a pass from Raymond as a wrister from the top of the O zone skips off of a Flyer’s stick and the puck actually curved in the air and found it’s way into the net. 2-0 DET Raymond’s 2nd assist of the night.

At 10:08 Andrew Copp scores a short handed goal. He came off the bench and skated into a pass from Rasmussen after the big man made some nice plays to keep the puck in the O zone. Copp’s 100th career goal. 3-0 DET. All this setup as Larkin got the puck out and Petry skated it into the zone sending it deep to go switch. Petry may be added as an assist.

*with 1:23 left Kostin and Deslauries dropped the gloves and got an extra 2 for removing their helmets.
