Forward Justin Williams announced his retirement from the NHL yesterday.

He played 19 seasons in the league and won three Stanley Cups, including one with the Hurricanes and was also captain for Carolina in the 2018-19 season. Williams spent parts of eight seasons with the Hurricanes and was known for his consistent clutch performances in Game 7s.

It looked as though his retirement may have been coming last year instead, when Williams didn’t sign a contract for the 2019-20 season and didn’t start the year with Carolina. However, he re-joined the team part way through the season and was with the Hurricanes for the playoffs.

His departure means Carolina will lose a top-nine winger, though the Hurricanes did have 10 top-nine wingers for nine spots once Williams returned this season. Williams ends his career with 320 goals and 797 points in 1264 NHL games.
