Size has been an issue for a long time for the Montreal Canadiens and Marc Bergevin was therefore very happy to add the big body of Josh Anderson to his line-up. Less than 24 hours after the trade, the Montreal media got to roast the newcomer with plenty of questions, here are my takeaways from that call.
On being traded You don’t expect to be traded for one of your best buddies but there we are. We facetimed right after the trade, we were both on the golf course at the time (not on the same golf course since they facetimed) and Max only had good things to say about Montreal and said I’d thrive there. I’m excited to join the Canadiens, they have a good thing going, they know how to win, they’ve got the best goalie in the world and the list of good players goes on and on. It sure means a lot to be traded to a team that wants you as a player and this is a great place to play, a loud building, a passionate fan base and an original 6 franchise.
Of course, Columbus meant a lot for me, they drafted me, I played there for a long time and made some great friends. It was an honor to play for them but I’m definitely looking forward to this new opportunity. On his injury I was pretty banged up, I tore my labrum and fracture my clavicle so it took some time but I am now definitely ready to play. I would have played in the first round had the Jackets made it. The important thing is to go out there with full confidence and test it out, just go all out. I’ve spoken to a lot of guys who tore their labrum and they all said that their shoulder now feels stronger than the other one. Of course, when you get back, it’s normal to have a bit of angst, anxiety, it’s going to be in the back of your mind but that’s what training camp is for. The last season was very frustrating for sure, to have that happen in your contract year and then to come back too soon and just make it worst…I promised myself I’d never do that again. My focus this off season will of course be on being ready for camp and making sure I’ve not lost a step.
On his new contract We’ll have to see what the offer is like but if the numbers and the terms are good then yeah, I’d be more than happy to be a Canadien for a long time. I’m aware of the type of player I am and I know those are hard to find in the league. Of course, the fact that I am so close to being an unrestricted free agent has crossed my mind but like I said, if a long term deal is available, I’m all for it. I’m highly motivated to prove a lot of people wrong, I’m going to come in confident and thrive.
On his style of play I play a very physical game, my shot and my speed are big factors and I will continue to play that way. I believe I will be a good fit and I am 100% confident that I am healthy. Over the years, both my shot and my ability to find the open space to get into shooting areas have evolved a lot and I’m also great at creating some room for my teammates. On being an Ontarian playing for the Habs Yeah, I saw a lot of Leafs games growing up but for my 16th birthday, my dad said that he’d take me to see any game I wanted to see and I chose to go to Montreal to see the Habs in the playoffs against the Penguins and it was just amazing. The atmosphere was so special, and the Canadiens won 3-2. (This was game 4 of the Habs’ second round match-up with the Pens which they’d end up winning in 7 games, thanks largely to Jaroslav Halak in what has become known as the Halak Spring).
Anderson adds that things have been crazy since the trade and has not even have time to think about his number, so no he’s not contacted Brett Kulak yet to offer him another Rolex for his number. It will be interesting to see what Marc Bergevin manages to do contract wise with Anderson, knowing that Columbus only locked up Domi for 2 years at $5.3M per, making him an unrestricted free agent at the end of it.
Sur le fait d’avoir été échangé Tu ne t’attends pas à te faire échanger contre un de tes meilleurs amis, mais c’est ce qui nous est arrivé. Nous avons communiqué tout de suite après l’échange, nous étions tous les deux sur un terrain de golf (pas le même terrain puisqu’ils ont conversé sur Facetime selon Anderson) et Max n’avait que de bonnes choses à dire à propos de Montréal et m’a dit que je pourrais exceller là . Je suis excite de me joindre aux Canadiens, ils ont une bonne équipe, ils savent comment gagner, ils ont le meilleur gardien au monde et la liste de leurs bons joueurs est longue. à‡a signifie beaucoup pour moi d’être échangé à une équipe qui me veut vraiment et c’est un super endroit ou jouer, un aréna bruyant, des partisans passionnés et une des 6 équipes originales.
Bien sà»r, Columbus a été important pour moi, ils m’ont repêché et j’y ai passé plusieurs années et je me suis fait beaucoup de bons amis. Ce fut un honneur de jouer pour eux mais j’ai vraiment hâte de profiter de cette nouvelle opportunité.
Sur sa blessure J’étais pas mal amoché, j’ai déchiré mon labium et fracture ma clavicule alors ça a pris du temps, mais je suis définitivement prêt à jouer. J’aurais joué dans la première ronde si les Jackets s’étaient qualifiés. Ce qui est important c’est de reprendre l’action en pleine confiance, d’y aller à fond et de mettre l’épaule à l’épreuve. J’ai parlé à plusieurs gars qui avaient déchirés leur labrum et ils m’ont tous dit que leur épaule est maintenant plus forte que l’autre. Bien sà»r, quand tu reprends l’action c’est normal d’avoir un peu d’anxiété, d’appréhension, c’est certain que ça te trotte dans la tête, mais le camp d’entraînement sert à se débarrasser de ça. La dernière saison a été très frustrante, se blesser comme ça dans ton année de contrat, revenir trop tôt et empirer les choses…je me suis promis que je ne referais jamais ça. Pendant l’entre-saison, je vais me concentrer sur ma préparation pour la prochaine campagne et m’assurer de ne pas avoir de retard sur les autres.
Sur son nouveau contrat Il faudra voir de quoi aura l’air l’offre, mais si les chiffres et la durée sont bons, je serais plus que content d’être un Canadien à long terme. Je suis conscient du genre de joueur que je suis et que ce type de joueur est rare dans la ligue. Bien sà»r, le fait que je sois si près d’être un agent libre sans restriction m’a traversé l’esprit mais comme j’ai dit, si un contrat à long terme est disponible, je suis partant. Je suis motivé à montrer à plusieurs qu’ils ont eu tort, je vais arriver plein de confiance et exceller.
Sur son style de jeu Je joue très physique, mon tire et ma vitesse sont de gros facteurs et je vais continuer de jouer de cette façon. Je crois que je vais très bien cadrer et je suis confiant que je suis rétabli à 100%. Au cours des années, mon tir et mon habilité à trouver les espaces libres pour prendre des tirs se ont beaucoup évolué et je suis bon pour créer de l’espace sur la glace pour mes coéquipiers.
Sur le fait qu’il est un ontarien qui jouera pour les Habs Oui, j’ai vu beaucoup de matchs des Leafs pendant mon enfance mais pour mon 16e anniversaire, mon père m’avait dit que je pouvais aller voir n’importe quel match et j’ai choisi d’aller voir un match des séries à Montréal contre les Penguins. L’atmosphère était tellement spéciale et les Canadiens avaient gagné 3-2. (C’était le 4e match de la série de 2e ronde entre Montréal et Pittsburgh que le CH a fini par gagner en 7 matchs grâce en grande partie à Jaroslav Halak dans ce qui est maintenant connu comme le printemps Halak).
Anderson ajoute qu’il a été extrêmement occupé depuis l’échange t qu’il n’a pas encore pensé à son numéro. Il n’a donc pas encore offert de Rolex à Kulak pour son numéro. Il sera intéressant de voir quel genre de contrat Bergevin réussira à conclure avec lui, surtout sachant que Columbus n’a consenti qu’un contrat de 2 ans pour 5.3 millions par an à Max Domi, ce qui fera de lui un agent libre sans restriction dans 2 ans.
