Now on a three-game losing streak, which kicked off when the team was eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday, the New York Islanders continue to struggle against tougher competition.
The Islanders went 2-3-1 over the last six games, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins, but then dropping their second game against them, and then after beating the Montreal Canadiens, New York fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers and New York Rangers.
While the Islanders picked up a win against Montreal and split their games against the Penguins, the three more losses in a row once again highlighted how much the team has struggled against tougher competition this year.
I added up the numbers and this season, the Islanders have won just nine of 38 games against teams currently holding a playoff spot, with a horrible 9-26-3 record. Sure, it means they’re capitalizing big time against weaker teams but when facing tougher competition, they haven’t been able to keep up.
It’s a wildly disappointing statistic, given that this is a team who was expected to contend in the East, if not win it altogether. They lack the offense to compete against stronger teams and if they want to see different results, it’s probably going to require some major offseason moves.
In more positive news, the Islanders did sign prospect William Dufour to a three-year entry-level contract yesterday. Dufour was selected by the Islanders in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft and his contract will carry an $859,167 cap hit.
#Isles Transaction: William Dufour has agreed to terms on a three-year, entry level contract.
