Malcolm Subban didn't get much support defensively but didn't help himself either by giving up too many juicy rebounds. Yet he still stopped 31 shots and helped improve the PK to 2-for-3 on the night.
One silver lining from the evening happened before the game as Jonathan Toews had one of the featured tribute videos for Kane's milestone achievement. Visually seeing the captain is encouraging.
Wouldn’t be a celebration without a message from the Captain. @JonathanToews shares a special message for Kaner ahead of his milestone night. #1Kane pic.twitter.com/fgU29hDywc

Starting Lineup
The starting lineup reverted back to the default 12F/6D format which was highlighted by Ian Mitchell's first healthy scratch:

Game Notes
Johnson-Caamano Fight
It was a good thought by Reese Johnson to try sparking his team by fighting with Nick Caamano right after the Stars took a 2-0 lead in the 1st. Johnson tagged Caamano with a slight uppercut to take him down.
Odd-Man Breaks
There were too many odd-man breaks due to forwards and a defenseman pinching far low in the offensive zone leaving the other defenseman who was playing back out to dry.
Breakout Passes
Also, there were too many inaccurate breakout passes including stretch passes to no one and off-target short passes. Boqvist was the only one who was able to thread the needle whether long, short, or in between.
No Sustained Pressure
And there were too many one-and-dones and even none-and-dones as the offense was unable to either set up or sustain beyond a single non-threatening play. Credit to the Stars defense for being so suffocating.

Player Notes
Adam Boqvist
Boqvist has been so impressive defensively that he's arguably been the best with coverage and neutralization. He's adept at creating outlets to relieve pressure. Plus, he's activating offensively with confidence.
Lucas Carlsson
His primary assist on Janmark's goal withstanding, passing in general hasn't been Carlsson's strong suit at the NHL level. His failure to connect consistently is odd given how strong he was at it in the AHL.
Brandon Hagel
Another way to praise Brandon Hagel's work ethic and relentlessness is likening him to the rat or house league player who is just puck hungry pickpocketing anyone anywhere on the ice no matter the odds.

Roster Updates
Having Mitchell sit a game is actually a wise move by the coaching staff so he can not only rest and regain focus but also watch from the press box to have a bird's eye view of the ice and learn more.
This also allows the coaches to maintain 6 on D by rotating Mitchell, Carlsson, Nicolas Beaudin, and Wyatt Kalynuk into the lineup. Boqvist is on an upward trajectory so he deserves to keep playing.

See you on the boards!
