Eleventh Hour (blackhawks)

Trade Deadline

The trade deadline is Monday, March 21, 2:00pm CDT. At time of print, the Blackhawks have made only one trade yet it was a big one involving fan favorite Brandon Hagel. Many Hawks players have been in the rumor mill for months so the time is nigh to see who stays and who goes.

Friday's blog had an overview of my guesses at how the trade deadline would play out for the Hawks.

Marc-Andre Fleury

If Marc-Andre Fleury is destined for the Wild and Guerin isn't willing to give up a 1st or say even Matthew Boldy or Marco Rossi, then Hawks general manager Kyle Davidson needs to ask for one of the other top prospects and a 2nd rounder.

If the Hawks can retain salary on Fleury, ask for one of the Minnesota blueline prospects Carson Lambos, Ryan O'Rourke, or Jack Peart or a forward prospect Adam Beckman or Marat Khusnutdinov. There's also coveted goalie prospect Jesper Wallstedt.

Patrick Kane

If those are the parameters, Kane wouldn't fit as he only has one more year left on his contract at a cap hit of $10.5M. This of course assumes Kane would even agree to waive his NMC and Davidson is listening to offers to take advantage of.

Despite being newly anointed in the permanent role, Davidson as well as all other GMs aren't immune from the subterfuge that happens every trade deadline and offseason by saying one thing publicly but actual transactions showing otherwise.

Pretend that Kane decides to waive, the Rangers do part ways with Lafreniere, and the trade happens by the trade deadline rather than this offseason, consider this package to reunite Kane with former linemate and buddy Artemi Panarin:

* Rangers receive Kane at $5.25M retained, Wyatt Kalynuk, Reese Johnson, and 2022 3rd

* Blackhawks receive Lafreniere, Filip Chytil, at least one of Brennan Othmann, Will Cuylle, or Matthew Robertson, 2022 1st, and 2022 2nd

The likelihood Kane gets traded by the trade deadline is slim to none. Could he or even Jonathan Toews and Seth Jones get moved this summer? Maybe, maybe not depending on how Davidson's rebuild plan unfolds over the upcoming days, weeks, and months.

Highlights

Blackhawks Notebook

* Taylor Raddysh had a solid debut weekend for the Hawks by being hard on the foreceheck, getting open for passes, going hard to the net, and looking for tip-ins; his industrious nature manufactures chances for his line.

* Boris Katchouk turned in a similar debut weekend as Raddysh with similar offensive traits as well as respectable defensive awareness in all zones; in addition, Katchouk brings an element of physicality particularly along the boards.

* Kirby Dach had a pretty strong weekend especially on Sunday when he moved back to center; his defensive effort and capacity to tilt the ice led to many scoring opportunities aided by increased patience to set up linemates.

* Ian Mitchell has vastly improved his defensive game with an ability to maintain tight gaps, shut down rushes, get stops, and flip the ice; he's also ramped up his offense as a sophomore pro now with 28 points on 9 goals and 19 assists.

* Josiah Slavin continues with his hot stick notching his second 2-goal game in the past 8 games where he's registered 6 total plus 2 assists; he had previously gone without a goal dating back to November 19.

* The top line of Lukas Reichel, Michal Teply, and Andrei Altybarmakian had 9 points on the weekend with 3 points apiece; all 3 goals registered by their line were byproducts of persistence and creative playmaking.
