The Wings, finally, have 10 wins. It took 41 games to get there. It was just a couple of nights ago I was lamenting a fantastic, but unrewarded, outing by Jonathan Bernier. His outing tonight was just as good and he gave Detroit their first win in 7. San Jose was frustrated to be sure, and with every reason. The Penalty Kill is the best in the league, and the compete and desire is there. It truly seems that Pavelski is dearly missed in that room. Couture is a tremendous player, but “little Joe… brought something special that would confound Detroit year after year. The “intangibles… of leadership and character are often undervalued, Pavelski would be a welcome presence during this very difficult season in San Jose.
The positives for Detroit really come down to Bertuzzi and Bernier. Tyler’s goal, coming the day after his all star selection, was a beautiful tip in. His compete level is never in question. Tyler is doing everything he can during a contract year to prove he belongs on this team long term. I’m sure Yzerman is crunching the numbers. More endearing to #59 is his attitude. He seems to stay fairly steady, and his response to the All Star nomination was impressive. He said that he was honored, but if the league didn’t have to pick someone from every team he probably wouldn’t be going. That line is something usually reserved for bitter pundits, and is an eye opening remark. Bertuzzi isn’t pleased with this year, neither is Larkin. The fact that he still competes when things are this difficult is truly a testament to the type of character that you need in your leaders.
2019 has not been kind to the Red Wings or their fans. Beyond the obvious in wins and losses, injuries seem to abound. The payoff, in theory, is that a very good player will be joining the team at the upcoming draft. So, this season may be the labor pains of a bouncing baby prospect, let’s hope they are a game changer.
Enjoy the final moments of 2019. It will, literally, never happen again. As each year closes out there are no guarantees, for good or for bad. My personal hope for all of you that 2020 is better than 2019 and that you have a safe and happy new year. We’ll reconvene Friday as Detroit faces of versus the Dallas Stars, fresh off of their Winter Classic appearance
