Chris Tanev Surgery Update: Leafs Defenseman Returns to Practice, Berube Shuts Down Surgery Talk
Just days after NHL Insider Nick Kypreos floated the possibility of surgery for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev, the conversation has taken a sharp turn. Kypreos had suggested a procedure could address a structural issue stemming from his second injury of the season, a suspected concussion following a hit by Matvei Michkov, and allow for a return.
However, Tanev made a positive step today, returning to Leafs' practice wearing a red non-contact jersey.

Head Coach Craig Berube provided a critical post-practice update that appears to dismiss the earlier surgery rumors, easing concerns among Leafs Nation.
Berube on Tanev: "We're still waiting for the results. I don't know yet. Wish I did, but can't speed him up."

Potential for surgery? "No, not right now. I don't believe that's going to be an option right now, so just be patient and wait for the results." #Leafs
While this is excellent news for Tanev's immediate health, it offers no clarity on his long-term future with the team. In Tanev's absence, the Maple Leafs have adopted a 'defense by committee' approach and are finding their rhythm. Notably, recent waiver claim Troy Stecher has solidified his place on the blue line, arguably playing some of the best hockey of his career.
With Dakota Mermis sidelined following a Monday night injury, the Leafs are expected to give rookie Henry Thurn his season debut tonight as they host the San Jose Sharks. This latest Leafs injury update keeps the spotlight firmly on the team's evolving defensive corps.
