Hot Mic Controversy Shadows Leafs’ Latest Loss to Capitals
The Toronto Maple Leafs fell to the Washington Capitals 4-2 last night, a loss that deepens the gloom surrounding the team’s current slide. The defeat drops the Leafs' record to a dismal 2-6-2 in their last 10 games, with no reprieve in sight as they head to Pittsburgh for a clash tomorrow night. The team hasn't won a game in regulation since November 5th and currently sits just two points up on the 31st-placed Calgary Flames.
A Scoreboard that Flatters the Effort
While a 4-2 loss looks respectable on paper, it doesn't do justice to show how poorly the Leafs played, being outshot 34-22. In fact, the Leafs were saved by a blown call early in the game from what could have been a much uglier scoreline. Just 21 seconds into the game, Dylan Strome scored a goal he thought would give his team a 1-0 lead.

Luckily for the Leafs, in the course of the action referee Kelly Sutherland lost sight of the puck and blew the play dead before Strome put the puck into the net. The play was escalated to the Situation Room, who with Sutherland's help made the decision to uphold the no goal call.
Here's the ruling from the NHL Situation Room on the Capitals no goal 21 seconds in.

"Owe You One"
Later in the first period, with the Capitals trailing, a hot mic captured a candid exchange between Capitals’ defender Trevor van Riemsdyk and Sutherland. While waiting with the puck behind the Capitals’ goal, TVR can be heard telling Sutherland he cost him an assist. At this time Sutherland replies telling the defender that, “he owes him one.”
Some hot mic magic which I'm sure #LeafsForever fans will appreciate.

Fan Reaction: Managing the Game or Crossing the Line?
While in the context this interaction is completely understandable, officials often manage relationships with players on the ice, to some fans they felt like no referee should ever make any sort of comment that could be interpreted as impacting the game.
Other fans immediately compared this play to the incident which ultimately cost former NHL referee Tim Peel his career. This play truly encapsulates how many fans feel about NHL reffing on any given night and like one user stated, hockey may be the best sport, but the NHL might be the worst pro league for officiating.
while it didn't impact this game (good win for the caps my leafs suck) the fact that you have a ref saying this shit is rage inducing.

Best sport worst league. https://t.co/RIISVeqwWo
To me this is just a microphone capturing something that likely happens every night and not something to be blown out of proportions. But with the league working so closely to integrate with gambling platforms incidents like this must be avoided. I don't personally feel that Sutherland deserves a punishment, but the league may feel differently and if so justifiably.
What are your thoughts on this interaction? Would you consider the comment by Sutherland inappropriate? Should the league investigate this comment further or just let it go as a poorly timed exchange?
