For the second year in a row the Devils will use a compliance buyout.
Lou Lamoriello waited until the last minute, likely in hopes of making a trade, but decided to send Anton Volchenkov packing by using the team's 2nd and final compliance buyout on him.
Volchenkov, 32, had two years remaining on his contract worth an average of $4.25 million per season.
By ridding themselves of Volchenkov, the team was able to get his $4.25 million cap hit off the books while clearing a spot on the back end.
Lamoriello has said multiple times that he'd like to re-sign Mark Fayne and that he'd like to clear space for the kids to play more. Buying out Volchenkov allows them to do that.
It also gives the team a lot more financial flexibility, as they now have over $14 million in cap space entering free agency on Tuesday.
