Murray Makes Trade With Jets (kane)

Updated:

Trader Tim Murray is at it again. This time, he deals a 7th round pick to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for winger Jordan Samuels-Thomas.

The 6'4 190 lb. winger was a 7th round choice of the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009.

Nice trade to size, strength, scoring and experience and depth to the Rochester Americans' roster. The Quinnipiac University graduate scored 13 goals and 16 assists in 34 games last season. He collected 46 PIMs as well.

So Murray and Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff are talking trades, eh?

When will Evander Kane become a Sabre?

Have the Detroit Red Wings turned their trade laser pointer in the direction of Washington Capitals D Mike Green?

Fox Sports Detroit's Art Regner offers this report on this night:

According to a team source, the Detroit Red Wings have determined Washington defenseman Mike Green is their top trade target.

The source says the Wings have reached out to the Capitals regarding Green's availability.

Although Washington has indicated Green is staying put, moving the right-handed defenseman would make sense given the team's cap situation.

The Caps need cap relief in a big bad way. They are just $1.113 million under their 2014-15 salary cap with 12 forwards, two goalies and eight defensemen presently under contract.

Green is in the last year of his contract, which pays him $6.2 million. His 2014-15 AAV is $6 million.

The Caps signed veteran D Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik away from the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 1. Green appears to be the odd D-man out.

The oft-injured Green will turn 29 in October. He represents the type of D that the Wings need right now. he's fleet of foot, skater, can QB the PP, and is not afraid to join the rush.

In 70 games last season, the 6-foot-1, 207-pound Green scored nine goals and added 29 assists. He was a nasty -16 while eating up 23 minutes TOI per game. The source says Detroit's ultimate wish is to add a veteran right-handed defenseman for the short term, because it feels several of its young defensemen will be NHL-ready after another season in Grand Rapids.

The source says the Wings would like to move quickly for Green, and are hopeful they can work out a trade soon

The Red Wings are also rumored to be interested in Buffalo D Tyler Myers.

Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said at locker cleanout day that his #1 priority this offseason would be to finalize contract extensions for his superstar players Jonathon Toews and Patrick Kane. On Wednesday afternoon, the Hawks announced the "Captain Serious" and "Kaner" had each agreed to terms on matching eight-year contract extensions on Wednesday, as the Blackhawks wrapped up their top tandem for the long term. Toews and Kane will each receive $84 million of guaranteed money. Let me say that gain: $84 million dollars, which equates to a annual salary cap figure of $10.5 million.

Toews and Kane share an agent in Pat Brisson, who will be cashing a nice commission check off the $168 million combined contract extensions. Mrs. Brisson will be getting more diamonds for sure.

There was never any questions as to whether or not the Hawks would extend 19 and 88. It was just a matter of hammering out the term and dollars. If you ask me, I think that Toews and Kane left money on the table deliberately. They each could have easily asked for and received $12-$12.5 AAV million per season. They dynamic duo certainly have earned their gargantuan contract extensions, however, if they would have glommed up all of the cap space among themselves, that would have meant that Bowman would have to fire up his jigsaw and start cutting up the Blackhawks' roster. The Hawks are $2.2 million over their salary cap for the 2014-15 season. Difference making D-man Nick Leddy will be RFA after the 2014-15 season as well. He presently is a $2.7 million cap hit.

Bowman will have his hands full in 2015-16 trying to keep his core intact. At this moment, the Hawks have only $3.2 million in cap space with only 15 players under contract.

Bowman will have to pull a rabbit out of his hat in order to keep All-World D-monster Brent Seabrook, whose contract expires after the 2015-16 season. It will be near impossible for him to remain with the Blackhawks. Seabrook is a $5.8 million cap hit for this and next season. With his pedigree and impressive body of work, he'll no doubt command north of $7 million per season on the open market. How Bowman intends to re-sign Seabrook before he reaches the UFA market is a mystery. Stay tuned to find out the answer.

Bowman will also have to qualify and re-sign super-talented kids Brandon Saad and Marcus Krueger, who will be finishing up their entry level contracts at the end of the 2015-16 season.

Toews and Kane were top draft choices in 2006 and 2007. The Blackhawks were putrid back then, and the franchise was a shadow of its former self. Toews and Kane together resurrected the Blackhawks and have restored them to their glory days winning two Stanley Cups in their short tenure in ChiTown, and there are more Cups to come to them. Damn impressive.

Toews, the two-time Cup winner and two-time Olympic gold medalist, has scored 195 goals and chipped 245 while playing for the Hawks. For crying out loud, Toews is only 26 years old. He has already scored more game-winning playoff goals, 10, than any other player in Blackhawks history. He's a winner through and through. He's to the Blackhawks what Derek Jeter was to the NY Yankees in their glory days. Automatic. Toews wins the critical faceoffs in all three zones, plays against opponents’ top lines, and plays each and every inch of the 200 by 85 sheet of ice. Were I an NHL GM, and was tasked with having to select just one player to start my NHL franchise with, you better believe that without hesitation I would choose Toews. Not Crosby or Ovechkin. TOEWS. The kid is a winner.

What more can be said about Kane? The guy is a witch. He doesn't play with a Vapor stick, he plays with a Harry Potter magic wand. He's got the filthiest hands of any player in the NHL right now and he moves in and out of the danger areas like a custom Ducati bike rolling down the Autobahn at 200 mph. Kane has scored 178 goals and added 315 helpers in the regular season. He already has amassed 91 playoff points. Move over Danny Briere. PK is coming for your playoff scoring crown. Kane has been making the best defensive forwards and Norris Trophy candidate D-men look downright stupid at times. Like former Detroit Lions Hall Of Famer Barry Sanders, Kane slips the big hits and jukes opponents out of the sweaty, smelly jock straps. Kane is the engine that dives the Hawks' offense. I dare say that he hasn't even reached his prime yet, which is a scary thought to contemplate. I feel like Kane has so much more to prove, and he will.

The Hawks issued this statement after the signings were announced:

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that the team has agreed to terms with forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on eight-year contract extensions, which run through the 2022-23 National Hockey League season. A formal press conference will be held at the United Center next week, with day and time being announced at a later date.

Toews, 26, became the youngest captain in Blackhawks history, third-youngest in NHL history, on July 18, 2008 and has guided the organization to two Stanley Cup championships during his time in Chicago. He became the second-youngest player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP following the Blackhawks 2010 championship, the franchise’s first title in 49 years. He won the NHL’s Frank J. Selke Trophy, given annually to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game, in 2013 and was a finalist for the award in 2011 and 2014. Toews was also a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie in 2008 and was selected for the NHL All-Star Game in 2009, 2011 and 2012. He was named to the NHL’s Second All-Star Team following the 2013 campaign.

The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native has recorded 440 points (195g, 245a) in 484 career regular-season games with the Blackhawks, since making his debut during the 2007-08 campaign. He shares fifth on the franchise’s all-time list in game-winning goals (six), is 20th in goals, 22nd in points and is tied for 27th in assists. He has recorded 81 points (29g, 52a) in 94 career postseason games with the Blackhawks, ranking sixth in franchise history in playoff points, seventh in assists and ninth in goals. He is also the all-time franchise leader with 10 postseason game-winning goals.

Toews is a two-time Olympic champion, helping Canada to back-to-back gold medals in 2010 and 2014. He has also represented Canada at two World Championships, earning a gold medal in 2007 and a silver in 2008, and two World Junior Championships, winning gold medals in 2006 and 2007. Prior to his professional career, Toews recorded 85 points (40g, 45a) in 76 career games with the University of North Dakota from 2005 to 2007, reaching the NCAA Frozen Four in both of his collegiate seasons. He was originally selected by the Blackhawks in the first round, third overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Kane, 25, has helped the Blackhawks to two Stanley Cup championships, scoring the series-clinching goal in Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Final and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy following the 2013 title. Kane captured the 2008 Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year and has been selected to participate in the NHL All-Star Game three times: 2009, 2011 and 2012. Kane was also selected as an NHL First-Team All-Star in 2010 and named to the All-Rookie Team in 2008.

The Buffalo, N.Y., native has registered 493 points (178g, 315a) in 515 career regular-season games with Chicago dating back to 2007-08. He ranks 12th in team history in assists, is 15th in points and 21st in goals. He also ranks 11th in franchise history with 30 game-winning goals. Kane has posted 91 points (37g, 54a) in 93 career Stanley Cup playoff games with Chicago, ranking fifth in team history in playoff points and goals, and sixth in assists. He shares second in Blackhawks history with two playoff hat tricks and is third with seven postseason game-winning tallies.

Kane has represented the United States in two Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal in the 2010 games in Vancouver. He also appeared for the U.S. in the 2008 World Championships and won a bronze medal at the 2007 World Junior Championships. Prior to his professional career Kane played one season of junior hockey with the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights in 2006-07, tallying an OHL-high 145 points (62g, 83a) in 58 games. He was named the OHL’s Rookie of the Year and an OHL First-Team All-Star, as well as to the OHL All-Rookie Team. Kane also played two seasons with the United States National Team Development Program, in Ann Arbor, Mich., from 2004 to 2006. He was selected by the Blackhawks in the first round, first overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft
