Kings Sip From Lord Stanley's Cup (sabres mckee otters kings)

Alec Martinez closed the show on the longest postseason in franchise history with the longest game they had ever played.

Thanks, CBC

Tyler Toffoli's well executed far pad shot created the rebound that Martinez banged behind Henrik Lundqvist for the 2OTGWG.

Martinez scored 14:43 into the second overtime, and the Kings won the Stanley Cup for the second time in three years with a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers in Game 5 on Friday night.

The Rangers led 2-1 in a tight game until Marian Gaborik scored a tying PPG with 12:04 left in regulation for the never-say-die Kings, who rallied from yet another deficit before finishing off the Rangers in the longest game in franchise history and the third overtime game at Staples Center in this series.

"Fortunately, the rebound came to me and I was able to put it in," Martinez told the Canadian Press . "The New York Rangers are a hell of a hockey team. We knew it was going to be a tough series." Jon Quick made 28 saves and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Justin Williams scored an early goal as LA added its second title to its 2012 championship.

Lundqvist stopped 48 shots in another standout performance for the Eastern Conference champions.

Kings captain Dustin Brown handed received the Cup from Commissioner Bettman, raised it over his head for a brief skate, then immediately handed it to former Sabre D Robyn Regehr who earned his first Stanley Cup championship in is 15 year career. A classy move indeed by Brown. Regehr was injured in the Western Conference Finals and missed all five game in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Talk about respect and admiration. Brown's unselfishness says a lot about how tight and together the Kings are as a team.

Thank to @B0undless (Tim Thompson) for another stellar season producing the HNIC opening montages.

The show must go on.

Congratulations are in order for my old friend, Jay McKee.

The Erie Otters have added McKee to their coaching staff.

I love the move because McKee is a great hockey mind with a hockey resume that spans two and a half decades of high level competition.

The Otters have issued this statement:

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League are pleased to announce the hiring of Jay McKee as an assistant coach with the team.

“This is a very proud moment for us and a special moment for this city and for the Erie Otters,… said General Manager and Governor Sherry Bassin. “For Jay McKee to join us…it’s great for our hockey program. It’s a great relationship.…

McKee, a 14-year-veteran of the NHL playing with Buffalo, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh, will fill the assistant coach role left by Chris Hartsburg who took up the head coaching position with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL.

“I look forward to being a part of this (team),… Jay McKee, Otters new Assistant Coach said Friday. “I expect our players to want to be NHL players. What I want to do here is not only develop the players on the ice…but improve them as people.… McKee recently held an assistant coach position with the Rochester Americans, the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres. He also volunteered as an assistant coach with the Niagara University men’s ice hockey team during the 2010-2011 season. His duties will include overseeing the team’s defense and penalty kill.

“We are very fortunate to have Jay a part of the team,… Head Coach Kris Knoblauch said. “We felt Jay was our guy. What he brings to our team would be perfect for our defensemen. I think we’re going to pick up right where we left off last year.…

I feel very old right now. I first met McKee when he was a 19 year old rookie in Buffalo. Now, I have to refer to him as "coach". He's a stone cold beauty and I know that he will excel in his new role shaping the hearts and minds of the youngsters in Erie.

Here's hoping that McKee will sell Connor McDavid on the many positives of playing in a hockey mad region like Buffalo-Niagara.
