NHL training camps open league wide this week so, as we approach regular season action, I'll continue to preview what to expect this year.
I recently posted my picks for the Vezina as well as the Norris. In this edition I'll be predicting the NHL's MVP for the 2014-15 season.
When making predictions I don't always go with the sexy pick, but in this case I'm going to do just that and choose Sidney Crosby.
In large part due to some concussions in years past, Crosby has only won the award twice. That said, I like him to repeat last year's success and tie Alex Ovechkin for first place in the NHL with three MVP's since entering the league.
For my money Crosby is the best player in the NHL and it's not really close.
He's recored over 100 points in each season (five) he's played in 77 games or more. His career points per game average is 1.4, and over the last three years he's averaged 1.43 points per game, so if he stays healthy there's just no way I don't see him winning this award. I don't care if he's playing with Evgeni Malkin or the guy from the local pizza store.
In today's NHL it's becoming increasingly hard to record over 100 points, and Crosby has consistently reached that plateau. Last season Crosby was the only player who posted more than 90 points, so he really is a step (or ten) above the rest.
He's the best player of this generation, and I think he proves that again with another MVP caliber season in 2014-15.
Who do you think will win the Hart Trophy this year? Feel free to chime in with your thoughts.
