Devils Sign Cory Schneider to Long-Term Extension (Cory Schneider)

After allowing Martin Brodeur to test free agency, the Devils turned the page on a great chapter of hockey, and committed to Cory Schneider as the team's new franchise goaltender.

Today they officially gave Schneider the keys to the car as he signed a long-term contract to become the team's undisputed No. 1 goaltender.

Schneider signed a seven-year, $42 million contract ($6M per) that will keep him a member of the Devils through the 2020-21 season. He was not set to become an unrestricted free agent until after the season, but Lou Lamoriello obviously felt it was best to take care of his contract now rather than leaving it until next year with the risk of losing him.

Schneider has been an elite goaltender since joining the league, so it's no surprise he's going to be paid like one. Schneider is 1st in the league in save percentage since becoming a full-time NHL goaltender in 2010. His .928SV% is better than that of Tuukka Rask (.927SV%), Henrik Lundqvist (.925SV%) and the rest of the goaltenders the NHL has to offer.

His save percentages over the last four seasons are .929, .937, .927 and .921 and he's never posted a worse goals against average than 2.23 (he's been sub 2.00 in two of the last three years) so his performance matches his contract.

After over 20 years with Martin Brodeur leading the charge, it's Cory Schneider's team now.
