Update: Bobrovsky to miss three weeks with a lower body injury.
#CBJ make it official. Bobrovsky to miss three weeks (lower body)
— Alison (@AlisonL) December 10, 2015***
For those who may have missed the game last night, Sergei Bobrovsky was forced to leave with around five minutes left in the third.
We have an update on Bobrovsky per Aaron Portzline:
#CBJ G Sergei Bobrovsky has a lower-body injury, club says. Undergoing tests. Diagnosis later today.
— Aaron Portzline (@Aportzline) December 9, 2015Lower body is interesting as everyone seemed to this this was a head/neck injury. I guess that’s why we are not NHL trainers.
Prior to this announcement the team recalled Joonas Korpisalo from Lake Erie.
#CBJ officially announce that G Joonas Korpisalo has been recalled (emergency status)
— Alison (@AlisonL) December 9, 2015Don’t take this to mean that Bob is out for a significant time. Lake Erie doesn’t play again until Friday so bringing up Korpisalo means Bob doesn’t have to practice. This avoids the situation that happened in Toronto with James Reimer.
For Korpisalo this is a nice reward for him whether he sees NHL action or not. As we’ve discussed before with Kerby Rychel NHL players are paid by the day so Korpisalo is going to get a nice paycheck for the couple days he spends with the big club.
He's earned this promotion. He has been fabulous for Lake Erie posting a .928 save percentage, good for seventh in the league. He's ahead of some highly thought of goalie prospects including John Gibson, Zachary Fucale, and Malcom Subban to name a few. He's also been much better than his teammate Anton Forsberg. They have split time evenly with Forsberg playing in 12 games vs 11 for Korpisalo. Forsberg's performance lags behind as he just a .906 sv%.
If Bob has to miss significant time I would love to see Korpisalo get a shot at starting over Curtis McElhinney. Korpisalo has earned the shot and provides a lot more upside than CMac. Plus without Bobrovsky this team should be doing everything it can to improve for the future. Seeing what they have in Joonas Korpisalo would be a big part of that.
