Sharks Select Meier, Move Up To Take Roy In Round Two (nhl draft)

That's a lot to move up eight spots. Settle down Wilson.

Update: Pick used to take defender Jeremy Roy. Crisis averted. Roy was a right shot defender who was easily projected to go in the first round.

***** The San Jose Sharks selected Timo Meier from the Halifax Mooseheads with the 9th overall selection yesterday, keeping the pick after hours of speculation it could be on the move.

The Sharks almost had Bieksa and almost gave up the ninth pick for Cam Talbot - according to the rumors.

So far, they've dodged a bullet - but the fear of what's to come is still there, and will be until the draft is complete and nothing crazy - like the Boston Bruins - happens.

The best part of the day was that Wilson didn't do anything nuts - take solace in that.

Back to Meier. Here are what some people have to say about the 6'1", 209 lb, winger who scored 90 points in 61 games last year for the Mooseheads:

"Timo is about power, skill and undeniable determination. He can beat you multiple ways either with finesse or power. He has astute awareness of how to play off his linemates and take advantage of opportunities." - TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button (TSN)

"He's a solid and strong skater both with and without the puck, has high-end hockey sense and reads the play very well. He is very effective in 1-on-1 situations." - Dan Marr NHL Central Scouting (NHL.com)

Meier was ranked 12th on Bob McKenzie's final draft rankings, 14th on the final ISS rankings and 19th on McKeen's. Depending on which ranking you like more, the pick could be quite the reach.

Meier is a good prospect, but I'm not so sure the Sharks will be happy long-term on who they passed over. Mathew Barzal should have been the no-brainer pick for Doug Wilson and company after watching Zacha, Provorov and Werenski go in front of them.

I digress.

It's draft day two! Thanks for reading.
