Sens Drop One To Pens In Rookie Tournament, Fall to 1-1 (Senators)

Well, so much for those hopes of an organizational perfect season, as those hopes were dashed after just two games. Of course, I kid.

The Senators couldn't find the back of the net for over 59 minutes, and despite outplaying the Penguins for stretches, they couldn't match the Pens defensively, en route to a 4- loss in the London Rookie tournament.

It drops their record to 1-1, as they set to square off against the Habs on Sunday afternoon before heading home where some will get training camp invites while others will be sent home to junior, or outright released.

Chris Driegder, who looked pretty good in his half of the game on Friday night against the Leafs, couldn't replicate that performance in going the distance in this one. Matt O'Connor will get the start and play the full game against the Canadians, facing off with Habs prospect Zach Fucale in the 4:00 start.

Matt Puempel was the lone Senator to beat Pens netminder Tristan Jarry, but his goal was much too little and far too late as he broke the shutout bid with just 42 seconds left. On a bright note, it was Puempel's second straight game with a goal as he pushes for a roster spot.

Pittsburgh moves to 2-0 after having won their opener against Montreal in OT, and can clinch the tournament with a win over 0-2 Toronto on Sunday night.

The Senators were without injured forwards Nick Paul (hamstring) who missed the whole tournament as well as Buddy Robinson, who blocked a shot on Friday night and won't play Sunday either. Nor will Mikael Wickstrand, who is also being held out for precautionary measures but all should be ready for main camp that kicks off next week.
