SCF: Hockey Needs More Love (pavelski)

I'm not just a hockey fan. I'm also an avid sports fan. I love most sports, especially the big three....baseball, football ans basketball, but I love hockey above all else. The same can't be said for most of the sports loving public or even the sports media.

Hockey is little more than an afterthought for most casual sports fans. Don't even get me started on sports talk radio. Talking about or even mentioning hockey is considered sports talk ratings suicide, especially here in California.

The lack of love for hockey is more than perplexing. It's downright frustrating.

Look at the world of sports today. Somewhere along the way sports took a left when it should have gone right. It zigged instead of zagged. It whipped instead of nae nae'd.

Football is trying to hide the fact that it's dangerous and wasting millions of dollars on deflated footballs.

Baseball just suspended another player for 162 games for PED's, Vin Scully is not being heard in 70% of local market homes and it's trying (and failing) to pass itself off as fun again. Fun again...like it was once fun, but now isn't? This is America's pastime?

And basketball? Don't get me started on basketball. Is there a sport more predictable than basketball? The first two games of the NBA Finals have been absolute blowouts. The team that was picked to win the title is destroying the team that was picked to be the team getting destroyed way back in October. Why even play the season.

Yet, those three sport destroy the NHL in ratings and most of the time it's like watching garbage bake in the Texas heat. It stinks!

If a casual sports fan wants to be entertained they would tune into the NHL Playoffs. There were more upsets, drama and excitement in the Panthers/Islander series than the entire Cleveland Cavaliers season. That in itself makes it worth a watch.

Three games into the Stanley Cup Finals and it's already shaping up to be a classic. Three games, three one-goal wins, back-to-back overtime wins, great goaltending and a plethora of stars on both benches. The NBA Finals will never be able to say the same.

Pens fan, Sharks fan or even a Kings fan...we are all the same. We're all part of the same family...the hockey family. What's not to love?

Chills time....
