The Buffalo Sabres scored six goals against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night. They did so without Evander Kane and Tyler Ennis in the lineup, too. The Sabres special teams accounted for four of their six goals including three power play tallies and a shorthanded beauty. The Sabres now have scored an SHG in each of the first two preseason games.
There was a lot to like about Buffalo's effort in this one. They dug out of an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game at 3s at the 11:10 mark of the third period.
Mark Pysyk scored the game winning goal and assisted on two others.
Samson Reinhart added three assists while playing right wing instead of his customary center ice position.
Brian Gionta and Nic Deslauriers added a goal and an assist apiece. Bredndan Guhle (2nd round, 2015) chipped in two assists.
For the second time in the past two games, Robin Lehner allowed three goals against in just forty minutes of work. I'm giving Lehner the benefit of the doubt because he is still rusty. Wednesday night was the first game action that he had played in since February 14 when he suffered a concussion when he collided with his former Senators teammate Clarke MacArthur. Lehner looked good in the first period on Wednesday night vs. Ottawa. He suffered a let down in the second period of that game. On Friday night, Lehner was shaky early in the first period, but stiffened hos game, made several key saves and gave his Sabres teammates the opportunity to wage their comeback.
Marcus Foligno, Brian Gionta, Nic Deslauriers, Ryan O'Reilly, Mark Pysyk and David Legwand all scored for the Sabres,
