QUICK HITS: OCTOBER 13, 2016
* The Flyers made official yesterday that Roman Lyubimov, who will switch from number 60 to number 13, will be part of their actual opening night roster in Los Angeles on Friday. Jordan Weal, who was present but not on the ice for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms' practice on Wednesday, has been assigned to the Phantoms.
* Today at 10 a.m., there will be a ceremony at Philadelphia City Council chambers at City Hall in which proclamations will be made to commemorate the legacy of the late Ed Snider and also to recognize the Flyers' 50th anniversary season. Attendees include Flyers president Paul Holmgren, Flyers COO Shawn Tilger and three of Ed Snider's children (son Craig and daughters Lindy and Sarena).
* Tomorrow at noon in Dilworth Plaza, there will be a Flyers 50th Anniversary pep rally attended by Flyers Alumni representatives Brad Marsh, Joe and Jim Watson, Todd Fedoruk and Bob Kelly. Mayor Jim Kenney will drop a golden puck to start the festivities. There will be giveaways, prizes, t-shirts and other attractions for fans who attend.
* Al Hill's modern-era NHL record five points (two goals, three assists) in his National Hockey League debut was under siege last night by highly touted Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Auston Matthews but survives unmatched. Matthews set a modern-era record with a four-goal debut last night in Toronto's 5-4 overtime loss to Ottawa but fell one point short of Hill's total point record, which was set on February 14, 1977 at the Spectrum.
* Mark Howe has been selected to receive the 2016 Lester Patrick Trophy for his service to hockey in the United States, along with ECHL co-founder Pat Kelly. Howe adds to a legacy that also includes inductions into the Hockey Hall of Fame, United States Hockey Hall of Fame, Flyers Hall of Fame and the retirement of his number by the Flyers. Howe will accept the Lester Patrick Trophy as part of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame induction celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in Philadelphia.
* The Flyers announced an addition yesterday to the roster for the 50th Anniversary Alumni game on January 14 between the Flyers Alumni and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Mikael Renberg will make the trip from Sweden to Philadelphia in order to play on a fully reunited Legion of Doom line with Eric Lindros and John LeClair. The LOD will also be together for the Hall of Fame Legends Classic in Toronto in November, playing for Team Lindros. Former Flyers captain Lindros will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 14 along with the late Pat Quinn, Sergei Makarov and Rogie Vachon.
