In this edition of the hotstove we share our power rankings for the top-5 teams in hockey.
Todd Cordell
1. Washington Capitals (27-6-2)
The Caps have a deep lineup headlined by one of the best goal scorers in Alex Ovechkin, one of the best playmakers in Nicklas Backstrom, one of the best defenseman in John Carlson, and one of the best goaltenders in Braden Holtby. It should be no surprise that they're making quick work of almost every team in hockey.
2. Dallas Stars (27-7-3)
No team can score goals like the Dallas Stars. They are loaded with star power and are never out of a game as a result. There is room for improvement but with the talent the Stars have they're going to come out on top more often than not.
3. Los Angeles Kings (23-11-2)
The Kings are 23-8-2 following a slow start to the season. Anne Kopitar is starting to find his game, Tyler Toffoli is scoring like there's no tomorrow and they are the best possession team in hockey. The Kings seem poised for another deep playoff run.
4. Chicago Blackhawks (21-13-4)
The Hawks haven't been themselves for much of the season yet just four teams have more wins than they do.
5. Florida Panthers (21-12-4)
The Cats are getting balanced scoring, Aaron Ekblad is doing a remarkable job anchoring the blue line and Roberto Luongo looks like he did five years ago.
Jason Lewis 1. Washington Capitals - 27-6-2
The Caps have gone from an all-out offense team to a responsible 200-foot team. Thanks Trotz, oh and Based Braden Holtby. A more complete team than Dallas.
2. Dallas Stars - 27-7-3
Have we seen a more formidable offense in the league over the last 10 years? These guys are as nuts as they are entertaining. Goaltending will forever be an issue with me, but if you score 7 a game.....
3. Los Angeles Kings - 23-11-2
Hiccup on the last road trip, but quietly going about their business in a weak Pacific. Toffoli is now on pace for over 35 goals this year.
4. St Louis Blues - 23-12-4
With the emergence of Colton Parayko, they might have the best defensive depth chart in the NHL right now.
5. Florida Panthers - 21-12-4
There are a ton of teams that you could place at No. 5, but the Panthers are the hot hand. Scoring by committee, they have six players with 20+ points, three in double digit goals, and a resurgent Luongo helps too.
