Meltzer's Musings: Prospect Updates, Faceoff Against Cancer, Snider Hockey (Flyers)

FLYERS PROSPECT UPDATES: SEPTEMBER 12, 2015

With Flyers' rookie camp slated to get underway on Monday, the organization's CHL-affiliated players are getting ready to temporarily leave their junior teams to attend camp in Voorhees. In the meantime, they have been training and appearing in preseason games with their CHL clubs. The QMJHL regular season got underway on Thursday.

Over in Europe, most regular seasons are now underway but the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) regular season won't get started until next week.

* QMJHL: On Friday, Flyers 2014 second-round pick Nicolas Aube-Kubel scored two goals and an assist to help spur the Val'd'Or Foreurs to a 7-3 win over the Victoriaville Tigers. He was plus-five, with five shots on goal (eight attempted), two credited hits and two penalty minutes (late second-period slashing penalty).

The Foreurs trailed 1-0 at the first intermission before Aube-Kubel started a four-goal outburst in the second period by scoring on the opening shift. He scored again at 7:49 of the third period to open a 6-3 lead for Val-d'Or. Aube-Kubel earned third-star honors for the game. Linemates Mathieu Nadeau (two goals, one assists) and Anthony Beauregard received first-star and second-star selections.

* QMJHL: Flyers 2015 fourth-round pick Samuel Dove-McFalls and the St. John's Sea Dogs open their regular season schedule on Saturday. The team will host the Halifax Mooseheads at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

* WHL: The Calgary Hitmen have a preseason road game on Saturday against the Edmonton Oil Kings. Flyers 2014 sixth-round pick Radel Fazleev has not played at all in the preseason, as he is dealing with an upper-body injury sustained during training camp with the Russian national junior team in Moscow in late July as the team prepared for the World Junior Summer Showcase.

Teammate Travis Sanheim, the Flyers 2014 first-round pick, has dressed in one of three preseason games for the Hitmen. He scored a goal and was plus-one in his lone preseason outing. Sanheim, who played for Canada at the World Junior roster evaluation tourney in August, has had a busy late summer. On Aug. 29, he took part in fitness testing at the Hitmen training camp and then flew to Toronto as one of the NHL prospects invited to the NHLPA's Rookie Showcase.

Neither Sanheim nor Fazleev will play in Saturday's game against Edmonton. They are scheduled to fly together from Calgary to Philadelphia to get ready for training camp.

* WHL: Flyers 2015 first-round Ivan Provorov had his arrival in Brandon, Manitoba, delayed by visa problems but he got there in time to participate in on-ice workouts before his scheduled departure for Philadelphia. On Friday, Provorov had one assist and was plus-two in Brandon's home 6-2 preseason win on Friday over the Regina Pats.

* OHL: The Ottawa 67's lone preseason game has been a inter-CHL game against the QMJHL's Gatineau Olympiques. Flyers 2015 first-round pick Travis Konecny recorded one assist in the loss. On Tuesday of this week, the 67's practiced at TD Place in Ottawa. Warm temperatures created a heavy fog on the ice, but practice went on as scheduled. Team captain Konecny is likely to skate the right wing on the Ottawa line with Nathan Todd and Jeremiah Addison as potential linemates during the regular season.

* Czech Extraliga: Pirati Chomutov was shut out by Ocelari Trinec, 3-0, in their regular season opening game on Friday. Flyers 2015 fifth-round pick David Kase saw sparing ice time in his Extraliga debut. Kase skated just 8:09 on the fourth line. He was 1-for-6 on faceoffs, did not record a shot on goal and was not out for any of the Trinec goals. The Pirates host BK Mlada Boleslav on Sunday.

* SHL: In their final preseason game, Brynà¤s IF Gà¤vle earned a 7-3 home win over Modo Hockey à–rnsköldsvik on Friday. Flyers 2014 fifth-round pick Oskar Lindblom skated on BIF's top line with Greg Scott and Anton Rödin. Lindblom assisted on the second of two goals by Rödin in the middle period and was plus-two for the game. Flyers 2015 third-round pick Felix Sandström was the backup goaltender for Brynà¤s against Modo and will open the season backing up veteran Austrian goalie Bernhard Starkbaum. The regular season gets underway for Brynà¤s on Sept. 17 with a home game against the Malmö Redhawks.

* MHL: Flyers 2015 fourth-round pick Mikhail Vorobyov did not record a point for Tolpar Ufa in a 3-2 regular season regulation loss to Tyumensky Legion on Saturday. He took an early first-period tripping penalty and went 12-for-25 on faceoffs. In three regular season games to date, Vorobyov has three assists (all coming on opening night).

* MHL: Flyers 2015 seventh-round pick Ivan Fedotov got the start in goal for Reaktor Nizhnekamsk on Friday in the team's regular-season opening game against Snezhnye Barsy Astana. Things went badly awry for the home side. Fedotov was strafed for four goals on 14 shots before being pulled at 8:53 of the second period. Backup goalie Alexander Yenyushin fared no better in relief, yielding three goals on 11 shots as Tolpar went down to a 7-1 loss. Reaktor returns to action on Sunday, hosting Yastreby Omsk.

FLYERS ALUMNI FACE OFF AGAINST CANCER

 photo Faceoff against Cancer.jpg

Taking place today as a full day/evening event at the Ice Works in Aston, PA, the Flyers Alumni Team will participate in the third annual Faceoff Against Cancer. Last year, the Alumni's participation helped raised $145,891 for Delaware Valley families in need, with roughly $13,000 apiece going directly to 12 beneficiaries to offset some of the high financial burdens involved in the fight against various forms of cancer.

The Faceoff Against Cancer features a hockey tournament, live bands and other entertainment, on-ice and off-ice events, kid-friendly carnival games, a silent auction, raffles, prizes, food and soft drinks. Alcoholic beverages are available at an additional adult admission price.

The highlight of the day is a game between the Flyers Alumni Team and a team of "All-Star" donors from the various participants. The game is slated to start at 7:15 p.m. EDT. Afterwards, for an additional $50 donation, event attendees can have dinner and a personal meet-and-greet with the Flyers Alumni players.

Even if you cannot attend the event in person, there's a variety of online donation options available. Donors can make a general donation to be split among all the beneficiaries or else they can make individual donations to go to the cancer patient beneficiary chosen by each of the participating teams. The beneficiaries come from a variety of different backgrounds and ages -- some are pediatric cancer patients, some are the parents of young children, some are grandparents and one is a memorial fund.

For more information on all of the day's activities, bios on the beneficiaries and more, please visit the Faceoff Against Cancer website. The cause also has a Twitter account (@FACEOFFvsCANCER) and Facebook page.
