Ex-Devil Martin Havlat Could Join Senators On Tryout Basis (Devils)

Martin Havlat may be heading back to where it all began.

In hopes of landing another job in the NHL, Havlat's camp has reportedly been in discussions with the Ottawa Senators - the team he was drafted by in 1999 - about joining the team in camp on a professional tryout.

Havlat was a big-time player for a long time but it isn't a surprise that he'll probably be forced to play his way into a contract this fall.

On an offensively starved New Jersey Devils team Havlat struggled to gain a regular spot in the lineup and recorded just five goals and 14 points in 40 games.

While Havlat didn't do much to help his own cause part of his struggles could be due to improper usage.

Havlat started less than 24% of his 5 vs 5 shifts in the offensive zone, which ranked him 19th among 20 Devils players that saw at least 300 minutes of 5 vs 5 ice. He surely could have contributed more if utilized in an offensive role.

In saying that Havlat is far from the player he once was and may be in tough trying to earn a contract this fall whether it be in Ottawa or elsewhere.
