The Bridgeport Sound Tigers have announced that they have signed Matt Carkner to a 2 year AHL deal. Also signing today was Kevin Poulin who agreed to terms with the Islanders on a two way, one year deal. Both players will be in Bridgeport and provide experience and stability to the Islanders’ minor league affiliate.
The Isles are loaded with kids in Bridgeport and I think Carkner will be a fine security blanket. He will be able to mentor many of the young players in the AHL, provide some protection for anyone taking liberties with our young players, and could be a depth roster fill in for the big club if an injury or two arise. I feel much better with a Matt Carkner being called up then the likes of an Aaron Ness or Dustin Kohn who we have seen in years past.
Kevin Poulin agrees to the same two way deal that he signed for the 14/15 campaign and he will offer some depth in Bridgeport as he will be splitting time with Isles goaltending prospect Stephon Williams. Williams will not have to be thrown into the fire right off the bat, but he should see at least half of the starts for the Sound Tigers this season.
