The Blue Jackets reportedly haven't made any progress towards getting pending unrestricted free agent Mark Letestu re-signed, but there's a good reason.
Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen will not be talking contract with any pending free agents - either unrestricted or restricted - until the World Championships conclude, according to Aaron Portzline.
#CBJ GM Jarmo Kekalainen says contract talks with UFAs and RFAs won't start until later in May, after the IIHF World Championships are done.
— Aaron Portzline (@Aportzline) April 28, 2015On the surface this makes a lot of sense.
There aren't really any high priority free agents to get locked up, so this will allow Kekalainen more time to decide what he wants to do with each player.
The only key potential free agent Kekalainen would like to get signed is defenseman Mike Reilly, who is playing for USA at the Worlds.
Trying to convince Reilly to sign with the franchise while he's playing overseas in attempt to win a medal for his country probably wouldn't do any good, either, so waiting for the tournament to finish is probably best for all parties.
It will be interesting to see what Kekalainen elects to do with some of these guys. Luckily we we won't have to wait much longer to find out.
