Training camp and preseason games are often used by teams to experiment with different line combinations and strategies.
On the first day of on-ice activities Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley is doing just that as he has split up the team's top line.
The Johnny Gaudreau - Sean Monahan - Jiri Hudler trio that combined to record 202 points last season may not be together again this year.
Micheal Ferland has taken Hudler's spot on the top line for now while Hudler has been placed on a line with Sam Bennett and Mason Raymond, according to Sportsnet's Roger Millions.
Nothing is finalized, obviously, but Millions suggests the Flames want to have a more balanced attack this season and that Hudler may be moved off the top line to do just that.
@HockeyEnthusias rumours they would like Hudler to add offense to another line. Nothing in stone though
— Roger Millions (@RogMillions) September 18, 2015I don't mind the idea of splitting up the big three - though I'm certainly not against them playing together - but I would prefer someone other than Ferland on the top line should Hartley elect to make some changes.
This will all be sorted out in due time but for now it's another intriguing possibility to keep your eye on in the coming weeks.
