The Calgary Flames have been linked to several goaltenders since Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that GM Brad Treliving and co. were considering changes in goal.
Who their opening night starter will be is anyone's guess but it seems safe to rule out Cam Talbot as a potential candidate.
Talbot trade watch continues. Expect he gets traded this week. Buf, Edmtn, SJ and Dallas in the mix. Great contract requires high return.
— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) June 22, 2015TSN's Darren Dreger previously had the Flames in the mix for Talbot but it appears they're no longer in the running for his services and I think that's a good thing.
The asking price is high - and rightfully so - as Talbot posted a .926SV% last season while appearing in 36 games for the Rangers. With several teams in need of upgrades in goal it's hardly a surprise that a potential starter carrying a $1.45 million cap hit for next season is drawing plenty of interest.
The Flames have a solid goaltender in Jonas Hiller under contract for next season, Joni Ortio is on a one-way deal and goaltending prospect Jon Gilles isn't far off.
Trading high draft picks or an established roster player for an unproven goaltender doesn't make much sense when the team already has a good option in-house.
Calgary could still very well trade for a goaltender - they've been linked to Ottawa's Robin Lehner, among others - but I think giving Hiller the reigns next season and re-evaluating their situation next summer would be the best course of action.
