Yzerman’s best pickup, Wings, Wolverines and Lions boosting the city (Red Wings)

So, this is one of those rare days off lately. In heading out to the 10 degree (windchill of 0) wonderland, it was a fantastic sight. In Oakland County, the Winged Wheel is on a lot of cars and homes. Now, the Lions are joining the fray as well as the Wolverines. Celebrating 3 sports at once and 3 quick errands saw the gamut. The hardware store had a Lions fan in a huge blue Lion’s coat with a knit cap talking to his friend outside and facing into the wind. Too excited to go inside. The pharmacy had more Lion’s merch than I can remember along with University of Michigan and the normal Red Wings selection. To be frank, Christmas wasn’t as heart warming as what I’m seeing now. People are proud of their teams and have a quick break from the daily dose of the Chicklen Little digest.

On a personal note, one of the best friends I’ve ever had passed away a few years back. He was a huge Lions fan. Jim, I know you would have loved this and way overpaid for tickets. Even at 47, too many people have moved on that would have loved what’s happening. I celebrate them all and for just a moment, we’re all back together celebrating past victories. Being older, I wish I would have made a bigger deal of that time with family and friends. Stanley Cups, parades, a city that ignored the problems and packed every open place with a big screen. I love when sports are going strong in Detroit.

Looking at the Red Wings, it’s been a big year for acquisitions that have a lot to give. Personally, Sprong is a player that has another level and is starting to get more recognition. Compher has brought the best out of Copp defensively. Gostisbehere is cerebral on the power play and O zone attack. Lyon is starting to look better and better, still like Debrincat and hope Kane is back soon. Of any criticism that could be leveled, the courage to buy out and turn over the roster is not one of them. Yzerman is willing to make changes and some of this year’s adds are fantastic. I still love Perron and feel like he is a boost on the ice, and Walman turned out to be a really good get.

What about you? Who is your favorite pickup and someone you would like to see for a while wearing the Winged Wheel? Let me know your thoughts, and if you’ve had any good run ins over the past week or two. It may be cold, but man it’s fun right now.

Just a quick thought. The NFL is disallowing Emagine from a theatre screening of the last Lion’s game. I really wish they wouldn’t. Movie theaters really need the traffic and that could be a fun event. Crain’s estimates that a post season game brings about 20 million to the city when the Lions are playing. That money means a lot to all those Coney Islands, the souvenir stands, and it’s great to see. Hopefully some sort of compromise can be worked out with Emagine and the NFL.
