Update - U.S.A. Will face Sweden in Gold Medal game. USA had a come from behind win after falling down 2-0 in the first. Wings prospect (unsigned, at MSU) Augustine stopped 19 of 21 shots while the U.S. scored 3 goals on 30 shots. You can look at the game details here.. Either way a Wings prospect will have a gold medal this year.
Detroit will take on Los Angeles tonight at 10:30 EST and both teams are looking to snap recent trends. Los Angels, though in 3rd place in their division, has lost 3 of 4 (4-5-1 in last 10) and we know Detroit’s 3-7 record over their past 10 games is one they want improve on and stitch some wins together.
It looks and sounds like Lyon could be getting every start in California and the schedule is fairly friendly for that. The team had a day off yesterday and won’t play again until Sunday. This usage in net is something that has been promoted well in the comments section and probably represents Detroit’s best foot forward at this point.
While waiting to hear about Copp’s availability, there was some interesting back and forth regarding Sprong in the last set of comments and in conversations outside of the forum. There seems to be an appetite for increased usage of the winger, and it remains to be seen if that will be the case.
Once the post skate video hits it will be embedded at that top. Let me know your thoughts on player deployment, and if you think there are players that should be getting more ice time due to recent performances.
Axel Sandin Pellikka, meanwhile, has made an impression and had a goal and an assist at the World Junior tournament. The right shot 17th overall pick from last year’s draft has 5 points in 6 games (2G 3a) and has been making headwinds amongst the hockey community. It will be interesting to see if he is signed to his ELC after the tournament or brought over to Grand Rapids at the end of the year if there are games remaining.
Detroit’s blue line has certainly been a frequent discussion, but it’s likely that fans will want to see the 5’11… Dman paired with a larger linemate as the team has not always been able to meet the physical challenges of opponents. Regardless, it’s good to see a prospect stirring the pot as it were, and one that has a chance to go for gold overseas.
As always, the conversation relies on your input. Let me know your thoughts on Detroit as they get ready to face the Kings, and any prospects that you feel will be challenging for a spot in the next couple years.
