Summary: Boston ultimately scored the game winner on an empty net after a player was taken down. 2 empty net goals were given up. Coyle had no coverage when he scored and at least one of the first two Boston goals should have been stopped. Detroit just does not have what it needs defensively to compete right now. There are good pieces offensively, but ultimately it feels like the team is just bent on needing to score 4 or more to win a game.

It was scary to see Lyon hit the boards and impressive that he wanted to stay in. That said, between at least one missed save and inadequate defensive coverage the team walks away with another loss. Hearing LaLonde complain about defensive coverage is near maddening. As a coach, he is ultimately responsible for systems in place and this team is not consistently able to battle in their own zone.

It’s not a new story to anyone who has watched this team this year. They remain the only team that hasn’t been able to win a game scoring at least 4 goals as we enter the new year. Last year the focus was on scoring. This next summer is going to be one where the goaltending situation and the defensive core is closely looked at. Edvinsson may be ready, Sandin-Pellikka is making waves. It will be interesting to see if the organization looks outside of the system for a blue line boost. That won’t be easy with Seider needing a raise and Raymond at least needing a bridge deal.

Detroit First Period goals: No goals for Detroit in first

Score: 1-0 BOS Shots: 8-6 BOS

Detroit Red Wings Second Period goals: Down by 2, at 13:01 Debrusk scored his 9th of the season, matching last year’s total (only played 64 games) on a nice wrist shot. 2-1 BOS

With 3:18 left, it looks like Detroit has tied it up but waiting on interference challenge. The goal stands because contact was made outside of the blue. Have seen that go different ways, not always consistent but Wings will take it. 2-2 and Detroit has a power play now. Cut short by a Sprong penalty.

Shots: 19-17 DET Score: 2-2

Third Period Detroit goals Compher gets Detroit back within 1 after falling behind 4-2. Now 4-3 but Bruins get a 5th.

Shots: 28-24 DET Score: 5-3 BOS
