Wings first sweep of Cali since ‘08, first season win with less than 4 (Red Wings)

Summary: I didn’t see Veleno’s goal until the replay. There’s a reason goalie’s like black pads, but the number of angles and clarity of the shots showed a puck go in. I have been critical of this, but tonight Detroit broke stride. They finished off a game with fewer than 4 on the scoreboard. Their last shootout win said 4-3 but it was a shootout. Still, Detroit won a game scoring just 3 goals and the final was scored with just over a minute left in the game.

It seemed like a near impossible ask. Detroit needed to try and sweep this road trip to stay in the points race. Lyon stopped 28 of 30 and gave Detroit the goaltending they needed to go with goals from Larkin, Veleno and Rasmussen. This was a good road trip.

Most of us will never know what it’s like on that charter plane after a set of games like this. I have to imagine there’s card games being played, and smiles all the way from the coast to the mitten.

This is one time where I will give Detroit a lot of credit. They did what they needed to do. That Veleno wrap around was quick and timely. I love seeing Larkin rip a power play goal. Perron is so good at the half wall. Rasmussen went to the net. If I’m an Anaheim fan that goal would probably sour me a bit.

A big set of kudos to Lyon. Goaltending has been rough this year. He gave the team what they needed to stay in the 3 west coast games. It’s got to be his net to lose at this point. Big performance and the team seems to get a boost out of his play.

A small thing, but I noticed far fewer instances of multiple defenders behind their own net. The coverage was much better in being sorted out and Detroit seemed to be more engaged in that area. Very good to see. The boys in red will return to a very difficult Eastern Conference and need to over perform to stay in the race. One game at a time, we’ll see where it all ends up.
