…‹In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the trade that saw Pittsburgh send Conor Sheary and Matt Hunwick to Buffalo in exchange for a 4th round pick. …‹ Todd Cordell
I think this was a solid deal for Buffalo. They really needed to add legitimate NHL talent on the left side and Conor Sheary gives them that.
The small but skilled winger has averaged 24 goals and 49 points per 82 games over the last two seasons. He's an efficient scorer at 5v5, he's fast, and he can play up and down the lineup.
Buffalo is not exactly hurting for cap space so taking on Matt Hunwick's contract isn't much of an issue.
If Pittsburgh wisely spent the money they cleared in this deal, I'd like it for them too. But they didn't.
They gave a five-year deal to a depth defenseman on the wrong side of 30 whose teams are annually far worse with him on the ice than without.

Ryan Wilson Jack Johnson is the Brandon Sutter of defensemen. He has a decade long sample that is objectively terrible. The Penguins got minimal value for Conor Sheary to free up cap space and then used it to get worse. Off to a bad start for the second consecutive offseason for Pittsburgh.

This is a great trade for Buffalo. Conor Sheary is an extremely underrated player - he's signed for two more years at a bargain price of $3 million. Considering I liked the signing of JT Miller for $5 million yesterday, Sheary, who is comparable and arguably better (but one year older), is a huge deal at $3 million.
If you factor in that PGH made this move to bring in Jack Johnson, who is worse than Matt Hunwick, it's a disaster all around for the Penguins. It is a series of moves that are shockingly bad.
Conor Sheary is a good forward and Buffalo made a great trade here.

I don't know why teams seem to be so interested in helping the Penguins tinker their always dangerous team. Teams are paying the Penguins to enjoy Kessel and Brassard. Botterill took the mistake that was Hunwick off their hands for the price of Sheary whom I don't hold in quite as high regard as some of my more advanced stats purest friends might be. He's a useful player and I think he will do well in Buffalo. This opens up a slot for Daniel Sprong however and I think that is the real benefit of this deal. They will add a more skilled, but less polished player and allow him to develop and hopefully in the top-6.
The rumours for Jack Johnson are discouraging as I loathe the player. If they get him for 3.5 like what has been hinted at, it allows them to re-sign Sheahan. Which is more important.
Crosby Malkin Brassard Sheahan
As the kids say (and Anteaters...google it) "Come at me bro." That's a 1-4 centre depth that can match anyone. They'll just need more consistent goaltending and hopefully Letang finding his "A" game.
All in all, I like this trade for both sides. Though I still can't believe teams continue to gift Pittsburgh cap space...they're one of the best teams in the league guys, stop helping them!
