The Arizona Coyotes won again last night.
They dusted an AHL team from Ottawa by a score of 5-2. If you want a game recap, you'll not get it here.
What's the point? There's a dozen of them available. The Coyotes are a decent 4-2-1 and could be an excellent 7-0 if things had gone right every game (which they never will).
That's not to say they should have a better record, just that they could. They've played six good games, and the only bad game they played was against the Jets, and they won it.
The Coyotes are 10th in the NHL in puck possession, and that is not too bad, all things considered.
They've also scored four goals in each of their last three games.
That might make you think that they're going to score enough to take advantage of their goaltending, but you'd be mistaken.
But still, the Coyotes are doing well. Their record is good, they're getting contributions up and down the lineup, and Schmaltz and Garland are on fire.
Keller has six assists in seven games, and he won't shoot zero% forever. The guy has been snakebitten.
So some stuff will get better, and some stuff worse. The Coyotes look to be about league average, and should they get a bit lucky, they might even make the Playoffs.
I'm still concerned they'll have trouble scoring long term, and I think I'm justified in this because a team leading the NHL with a save percentage that is practically 96% should have a better record.
The Coyotes have a 7% team 5v5 shooting percentage (brutal and unlucky) but they're goaltending has been so good they've still got a high PDO.
If your record is 4-3 and you're barely a playoff team with 96% goaltending, I think you've got a bit of a problem.
On a normal team, I wouldn't be too concerned because while the goaltending will for sure go down, the shooting will go up. But the Coyotes don't exactly have a roster with a lot of guys who will score goals.
I like their start to the season, it's a lot of fun to cheer for a team that is finally competitive. But they're relying way too much on goaltending that is not sustainable.
And given their main issue, it is perplexing that they continue to sit Barrett Hayton who, despite his inexperience, is probably their most talented offensive player that isn't Phil Kessel.
