I am going on vacation...
Not that that information means much to you, except for the fact that things will be quiet until I return. Of course, this will be when a major story breaks. Oh well, if that is the case, I will get to it before I return.
Anyways, I wanted to start up a conversation before I left, intending to revisit it once I return. My reason for bringing it to your attention before I dive into it is because I'm curious about your thoughts on the matter.
For the first time in eight years, the Calgary Flames require a new captain. The loss of Mark Giordano to the expansion draft not only left a hole within the organization regarding skill, but it did so on leadership as well.
Replacing what Giordano provided as a leader will not come easy to anyone. Realistically, it's quite unfair to place that pressure on anyone. Still, Calgary will need someone to step up and wear the "C" next season.
My question to you is who should be the next Flames captain (notice I used the word "should" and not "will").
Through my observations, it appears the most popular choice is Matthew Tkachuk. Though I totally understand that train of thought, I wonder how beneficial it is to appoint a player to captain when questions surround his future with the organization.
What about the current longest-tenured Flame, Mikael Backlund?
If Johnny Gaudreau signs an extension, does he receive the captaincy?
There are certainly other names one could throw out there as well.
So your task over these next few days is to provide your thoughts on the manner. I want to hear what you have to say and factor that into my next post.
Fire away Flames fans!
