The San Jose Sharks split their weekend back-to-back set, losing to the Boston Bruins on Saturday, then defeating the Seattle Kraken on Sunday.
3-1 LOSS TO BRUINS
Aside from their power plays, the Sharks really didn’t generate much through the rest of the period. They managed just five shots overall (with just two of those coming at even strength) and later in the frame, it was the Bruins who struck first, as Brad Marchand took a pass from Jake DeBrusk and beat James Reimer, putting Boston up after 20 minutes.
The Sharks were then badly outplayed in the second period, being outshot 15-4. However, Timo Meier still managed to tie the game on a power pay, blowing a one-timer past Jeremy Swayman. The game remained tied through the rest of the frame, and into the intermission.
In the third period, San Jose was outplayed once again. Brad Marchand capitalized with his second goal of the game, beating Reimer just as a power play expired. The Sharks did get some pretty excellent chances in the back half of the frame to tie it, but were denied by Swayman. Then with only about 40 seconds to go, Patrice Bergeron scored to secure a 3-1 win for the Bruins.
3-1 WIN OVER KRAKEN
The Sharks got off to a rough start for a second game in a row, being outshot by a massive 19-4 margin. The Kraken generated chance after chance on the rush but couldn’t convert and despite being completely outplayed, San Jose struck first, as Ryan Dzingel scored his first goal with the Sharks. Seattle responded right away though, as Morgan Geekie finally beat Reimer just nine seconds later to tie the game.
The Sharks did pick up the pace in the back 40 minutes, but still never really took full momentum. After some chances early in the frame, it looked like the Kraken had taken the lead with a goal from Calle Jarnkrok but after a challenge, it was called back due to goalie interference. Then a few minutes later, Scott Reedy put an off-speed shot at the net off a faceoff and beat Philipp Grubauer for his first NHL goal, as the Sharks regained the lead.
There were some good chances exchanged in what was a pretty even third period and Reimer had to be good to prevent the Kraken from drawing even. Then later in the frame, Jonah Gadjovich knocked in his first NHL goal to put the Sharks up by two, securing a 3-1 win.
It was a rough performance against the Bruins, where the Sharks were outshot by a massive 37-16 margin. That said, at least we saw an exciting ending, as the score stayed close and San Jose generated some great chances to tie it late.
Though the Sharks started poorly against Seattle, they did put together a more competitive back two periods. That said, they were still outshot terribly at 40-24 and really relied on James Reimer.
Speaking of Reimer, what a set of two games for him, playing both halves of the back-to-back. He stopped 73 of 77 shots and by comparison, San Jose managed just 40 shots over the two games.
There were also a lot of first goals against Seattle, with Ryan Dzingel getting his first as a Shark, then both Reedy and Gadjovich picking up their first NHL goals.
On a worse note, Mario Ferraro was injured against the Bruins and underwent surgery for a fractured fibula. He’s expected to miss six to eight weeks, which is a major blow to the Sharks’ blue line.
San Jose's next game comes tomorrow against the Vegas Golden Knights.
