The San Jose Sharks came up short against the Vancouver Canucks last night, falling 5-4 in overtime.

It was a brutal start for the Sharks, as they were outshot 15-4 and outplayed badly. Brock Boeser opened the scoring for the Canucks with a well-placed shot later in the frame and then under three minutes later, Quinn Hughes’ shot bounced in from the point, giving Vancouver a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes.

The Sharks did respond with a much better second period and got one back early in the frame, when Logan Couture’s shot banked in off Tyler Myers’ stick in front. The Sharks outshot the Canucks 15-5 in the period and while Juho Lammikko did increase Vancouver’s lead back to 3-1, Timo Meier made it 3-2 with a nice shot on a power play before the end of the frame.

In the third period, Meier picked up his second goal of the game on another power play, taking a feed from Tomas Hertl. Despite the Sharks limiting the Canucks to just five shots in the frame once again, Conor Garland buried a loose puck to put Vancouver ahead once again. However, the Sharks weren’t out of it and Alexander Barabanov managed to slide a puck past Thatcher Demko with under a second to go, sending the game to overtime.

San Jose couldn’t get the extra point though, as J.T. Miller scored on a delayed penalty to give Vancouver a 5-4 win in the extra frame.

It was actually a really strong back 40 minutes for the Sharks after a poor first period. They limited the Canucks to just 10 shots in the second and third period combined.

San Jose’s special teams effort was also a highlight, going 2-for-3 on the power play and killing off all four penalties. While it was far from a perfect outing, the Sharks bounced back to have a pretty strong game.

That said, they’ve picked up just one point over their two home games since the break and remain 13th in the Western Conference in points percentage. San Jose’s next game comes on Sunday against the Vegas Golden Knights.
