The San Jose Sharks dropped their third game in a row tonight, falling 3-2 in overtime to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the final game of their road trip.

It was a relatively even opening frame, with the Lightning outshooting the Sharks 9-7. That said, there weren’t a ton of great chances exchanged and the teams went into the intermission scoreless.

However, the Lightning opened the scoring around 1:30 into the second period, as Anthony Cirelli got the puck to Brayden Point on the wing, then went to the net to get it back and tap it into the net to open the scoring. However, Rudolfs Balcers tied the game shortly after, tipping in a shot from Marc-Edouard Vlasic. The teams didn’t generate a lot of shots after that but did exchange some good rush chances, though it remained tied through most of the period. However, Alex Killorn got the Lightning their lead back with under two minutes to go in the period, knocking down a puck in front and putting it past James Reimer.

The Sharks tied it up once again early in the third period on a power play though, as Logan Couture tipped in a point shot from Brent Burns. The Lightning really controlled the third period after that though, especially the back half of the period, but couldn’t convert and the game remained tied.

In overtime, Victor Hedman went down ice after a turnover from Alexander Barabanov and while he was likely looking to complete a pass, the puck deflected off Brent Burns’ stick and in, securing a win for the Lightning.

The Sharks were outplayed through a lot of the game, managing just 21 shots altogether. It marks the third loss on their road trip, which hurts their chances of climbing back into the playoff race.

Credit to James Reimer for another solid game though. He’s had to take on the full workload in Adin Hill’s absence and has certainly bounced back after a poor stretch.

San Jose now enters a long break, as the team’s next game is scheduled for February 14.
