Quick Hits: Sanheim, Jimmy Hayes, Alumni and More (Flyers)

Quick Hits: August 24, 2021

1) Heartfelt condolences go out to Flyers center Kevin Hayes and the entire Hayes family after the sudden and unexpected death of former NHL player Jimmy Hayes at the age of 31. Jimmy was Kevin's older brother. One day earlier, Jimmy and wife Kristen celebrated their son Beau's second birthday. The couple also has a three-month-old baby, Mac.

Jimmy Hayes was pronounced dead in his suburban Boston home on Monday morning. The cause of death is not yet known but foul play has been ruled out by authorities, according to multiple reports.

2) This has been a horrifying last few days in the hockey world. On Saturday, 16-year-old Edmonton Oil Kings center Caleb Reimer and two friends, 17-year-old prep school (Delta Hockey Academy) forward Parker Magnuson and 16-year-old Delta Hockey Academy forward Ronin Sharma died in an automobile accident in Surrey, British Columbia. The three teenagers were found dead at the scene of the crash.

Caleb Reimer showed considerable promise last season during his Western Hockey League rookie campaign. Unusually mature from a physical standpoint, the 6-foot-4, 194-pound center posted three goals and five points in 19 games. He'd have been eligible for the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

3) Flyers defenseman Travis Sanheim spoke to the media via Zoom yesterday to discuss his new two-year contract, which preempted an arbitration hearing scheduled for Aug 26. Sanheim said the team's cap situation for 2021-22 played into the compromise deal ( $4.675 million cap hit) factored into the two-year term. Later today, there will be an article on PhiladelphiaFlyers.com discussing Sanheim's outlook for next season.

4) Congratulations go out to Team Toyota, coached by John LeClair and Ian Laperriere, for winning the 2021 Fantasy Cup championship at the seventh annual Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp.
