4) Today in Flyers History: October 21,1997
Drafted by the Flyers in the third round, 71 st overall, of the 1993 NHL Draft, Czech forward Vaclav Prospal came directly to North America at age 18 and developed at the American Hockey League level with the Hershey Bears and Philadelphia Phantoms.
It took Prospal until the stretch drive of the 1996-97 season to finally crack the NHL with the Flyers. He went on to play 1,108 games in the NHL, including two stints with the Flyers. On October 21, 1997, a rookie Prospal had one of the best games of his early career. Skating right wing on the Flyers’ revised top line with Eric Lindros (one goal, four assists) and John LeClair (one goal, one assist), Prospal racked up four points (two power plays, two assists) in a 7-1 romp over the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning at the CoreStates Center. Young offensive defenseman Janne Niinimaa (one goal, two assists) also enjoyed a big game.
5) Flyers Alumni birthday: The late Larry Mickey was born on this day in 1943.
