Finally, what felt more like a marathon than a preseason is finally finishing, one last game of meaningless hockey before things start to get real, for fans anyways. For the players hoping the crack opening night’s line-up things are already very real. Tonight, will be the final chapter of the blue line battle, with Xhekaj, Schueneman, Guhle, Harris and Barron all on duty. Injuries to Edmundson and Matheson are kind of forcing St-Louis’ hand there.

Up front, Suzuki, Armia and Heineman all stayed in Montreal, which also complicated the head-coach’s task and means that we’ll see four lines we have very little chance of seeing on opening night. On the bright side though, it also signifies Slafkovsky gets yet another opportunity to shine and show that he’s getting better accustomed to north American play.

Monahan will be centering Caufield and Dadonov, Dach will be in between Drouin and Gallagher, Pitlick will find himself with Slafkovsky and Anderson while Evans will be between Pezzetta and Harvey-Pinard. It’s hard to know exactly what the line-up will look like on Wednesday, but I suspect Slafkovsky will be getting an extended audition through the start of the season before a decision is made for his first professional season on this side of the pond.

In 7 preseason games, the Canadiens are still winless and tonight might be their best chance to finally get a taste of victory as Batherson is the sole player from Ottawa’s top 6 to be in uniform and with Thomas Chabot getting a night off. It’s however fair to expect a rugged game since both Kastelic and Sabourin are dressed for the Sens.

Just after I published this blog, it was announced that the Canadiens had claimed Jonathan Kovacevic off waivers from Winnipeg. The 25 years-old right-handed defenseman is 6'4'' and weights 208 lbs and was a 3rd round pick (74th overall) at the 2017 NHL entry draft. He's only got 4 games of experience in the NHL but he has spent 3 years in the AHL, last year he got 30 points in 62 games with the Manitoba Moose and racked up 45 penalty minutes. What that tells me is that the Habs brass either really wants to take it slow with its young defensive core or the injury to Joel Edmundson may be lengthy, the former probably would be a good idea but the later would be very bad news. The newcomer had just signed a new 3-year contract with the Jets and has a $766,667 cap hit. At the end of the 2024-2025 he will be an unrestricted free agent.

Finalement, ce qui ressemblait drôlement plus à  un marathon qu’à  un réchauffement tire à  sa fin, un dernier match sans signification avec que les choses deviennent sérieuses, pour les fans du moins. Pour les joueurs qui tentent de percer l’alignement du match d’ouverture, les choses sont définitivement sérieuses présentement. Ce soir, on aura droit au dernier chapitre de la bataille de la ligne bleue alors que Xhekaj, Schueneman, Guhle, Harris et Barron seront tous d’office. Les blessures à  Edmundson et Matheson ont quelque peu forcé la main de St-Louis ici.

à l’avant, Suzuki, Armia et Haineman étant demeurés à  Montréal, la tâche de l’entraineur-chef s’est aussi compliqué et nous verrons quatre trios qu’on a peu de chance de voir au match d’ouverture. Si on veut voir le bon côté des choses, ça signifie également que Slafkovsky se voit offrir une autre chance de prouver ce qu’il peut faire et à  quel point il s’est adapté au style de jeu nord-américain.

Monahan sera au centre de Caufield et Dadonov, Dach en compagnie de Drouin et Gallagher, Pitlick entre Slafkovsky et Anderson alors qu’Evans se retrouvera avec Pezzetta et Harvey Pinard. Il est difficile de savoir exactement de quoi l’alignement aura l’air mercredi, mais je crois bien que Slafkovsky aura droit à  une prolongation d’audition en début de saison avant qu’une décision finale soit prise sur ou il passera sa première saison professionnelle de ce côté de l'océan.

En 7 matchs présaison, les Canadiens n’ont toujours pas goà»té à  la victoire, mais le duel de ce soir pourrait bien être leur meilleure chance de l’emporter puisque Batherson est le seul joueur du top 6 d’Ottawa à  être en uniforme alors que le capitaine Thomas Chabot profite d’une soirée de congé. On peut toutefois s’attendre à  du jeu robuste puisque Kastelic et Sabourin seront tous deux en uniforme.

Tout juste après la publication de cet article, l'acquisition de Jonathan Kovacevic par les Canadiens au ballotage en provenance de Winnipeg a été annoncé. Le défenseur droitier de 25 ans fait 6'4'', 208 lbs et a été un choix de 3e ronde (74e au total) au repêchage d'entrée de 2017. Il a pris part à  seulement 4 matchs dans la LNH jusqu'ici mais il compte 3 ans d'expérience dans la LAH ayant passé les 3 dernières saisons avec le Moose du Manitoba. La saison dernière, il a accumulé 30 points en 62 matchs tout en passant 45 minutes au banc des pénalités. Cela me fait croire en 2 possibilité soit l'état-major du Tricolore veut vraiment prendre son temps avec son jeune noyau défensif ou encore, la blessure de Joel Edmundson est plus sérieuse que prévue. La première option serait une bonne chose mais la deuxième, serait une bien mauvaise nouvelle. Le nouveau venu venait tout juste de signer un contrat de 3 ans avec les Jets avec un impact de $766 667 sur la masse salariale et sera un agent libre sans restriction après la saison 2024-2025.
