Ofer three on three (Red Wings)

When it comes to three on three, the Detroit Red Wings are oh-for-2017-18. The Wings dropped their fourth overtime game of the NHL season Saturday, second in as many nights and third in a week when they were toppled 4-3 by the New Jersey Devils. The Wings also fell 2-1 in extra time Friday at the New York Rangers and dropped 4-3 OT decisions to the Colorado Avalanche (Nov. 19) and Washington Capitals (Oct. 20). Going back to the start of last season, the Wings are 7-17 in OT and captain Henrik Zetterberg thinks he knows why. “It’s risk and reward out there,… Zetterberg said. “We have to play our defense before we go on offense. When they have the puck we just gotta be patient and wait for our chances. “Most of the time, when one team makes the mistake, that’s when the other team takes advantage.… Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek views three-on-three overtime as a crap shoot on skates. “Those three on threes I would say are 50-50 chances of who’s gonna get the opportunity to score first,… Mrazek said. “Larks (Dylan Larkin) had a good breakaway and their goalie (Keith Kinkaid) make a good poke check save. “From their chance, they scored. We just have to keep working hard on those three on threes and hope the luck is going to be on our end.… Toll Booth Playing for just the second time since Oct. 20, left-winger David Booth scored twice - opening the scoring 34 seconds into the game and then tying the count at 3-3 in the third period as the Wings rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime. “It’s pretty special,… Booth said. “It’s been a long career, ups and downs, and I think a lot of people had kind of given up on me. At times I had given up on myself. “Being in and out of the lineup, I just really enjoy being here, coming to the rink every day, and being very grateful for this opportunity to play for the Detroit Red Wings. So it’s been awesome.… The Detroit-born Booth came very close to netting a hat trick and heard his name chanted by the Little Caesars Arena faithful, something he’d dreamscaped as a youngster. “You kind of feel like it’s surreal at certain times, it’s not really happening,… Booth said. “That was so cool to hear that and to have this arena, city, kind of cheering for you.… Mrazek Down Mrazek was forced to leave the game in the third period to undergo concussion protocol after being involved in a heavy collision with Devils forward Adam Henrique. “I felt it after that hit,… Mrazek said. “I just couldn’t breathe.… Still, he didn’t leave the net until the first stoppage after the collision, which came when the Devils scored to go ahead 3-1. “The guys told me it took them a little while to figure out that the league called them,… Mrazek said. “There wasn’t any whistle in between. When they score I saw some guys and Blash shouting on me that I have to go with the head out.… Mrazek passed all the concussion tests and was cleared to return to action. Daley Out Hurt in Friday’s loss to the Rangers, defenseman Trevor Daley missed Saturday’s game with an upper body injury, but the prognosis is that his absence will be brief. “I don’t want to get too medical, I want to make sure I’m right,… Blashill said. “There’s good news in the sense that it feels like it’s just a matter of waiting for the tingling from a stinger, a matter of getting that feeling back to normal. “He just probably pinched the nerve a little bit.… Frk Update Right-winger Martin Frk (groin) missed his sixth successive game, and his return does not appear imminent. “I would say he’s definitely out for Tuesday (against Los Angeles),… Blashill said. “How he responds Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, would dictate Thursday (against Montreal). I think Saturday (at Montreal) would be a safer bet.… Follow me on Twitter @asktheduffer
