Given the uncertainty with Carey Price’s health status and the need for Cayden Primeau to be given some time to be the man in the American League with the Rocket, it was written in the sky that the Habs would have to sign goaltender Samuel Montembault to a new contract. For the first time in his career since his entry-level deal, Montembeault got himself a multi-year contract, a 2-year one way affair which will see him make $1 M per season.
In his media availability, the 25-years-old netminder looked rather please to stay with the Sainte-Flanelle and confirmed that he was rehabbing well from the wrist operation he had to undergo at the end of last season. In fact, he’s still seeing his physiotherapist but only to regain full amplitude in one particular move of the wrist upwards, once that’s sorted, he will be good as new. Montembeault has now been cleared to receive shots and he’ll hit the ice to practice in the coming days.
This signing can mean one of two things; either the Canadiens know that Price won’t be good to go or it’s a case of once bitten, twice shy and they are aware that even if Price is good to go at the start of the season, there’s nothing to say he will remain healthy the whole way through and they think its prudent to carry 3 NHL goaltenders. After all, Jake Allen also had his share of injury troubles last season, dealing with 2 significant groin injuries.
Personally, I still think that Price is more than likely done (and by that, I mean destined to LTIR and not retirement) and that the plan is for Montembeault to be the Canadiens’ second-string goalie behind Jake Allen. Hopefully, the organization has learnt and won’t be running Allen too hard, overuse having probably played a big part in his injury woes last year. For now, we don’t know anymore than we did at the end of the season about Price’s knee status because there’s no way to know how well it healed until he starts really testing it again on the ice. Off-ice training has not proven to be an issue with Price’s injured knee, but the inflammation returns when he gets on the ice and makes the numerous moves the goaltender position requires. There’s just something about the way he carried himself at the end of last season that screamed end of the road to me, the way he waved to his kids in the stands during play and, he said himself that he played his last game as if it was his last one ever. If that turns out to be the case, the Canadiens magical cup run of 2021 will have ended two great careers not just one and taken down the two pillars of Marc Bergevin’s Canadiens.

Dans sa disponibilité médiatique, le gardien de 25 ans semblait des plus heureux de demeurer avec la Sainte-Flanelle et il a confirmé que la réhabilitation de son poignet après l’opération subi à la fin de la saison se déroulait très bien. En fait, il voit toujours son physiothérapeute mais seulement pour retrouver toute l’amplitude dans un type de mouvement vers le haut, et quand ce sera fait, il sera comme neuf. Il a maintenant reçu le feu vert pour recevoir des lancers et il sautera sur la glace dans les prochains jours.
Cette signature peut vouloir dire deux choses; soit les Canadiens savent que Price ne pourra pas commencer la saison, soit il s’agit d’un cas de chat échaudé craint l’eau chaude, même si Price es ten santé pour débuter l’année, rien ne garantit qu’il le restera et il croit prudent d’avoir 3 gardiens de calibre NHL. Après tout, Jake Allen a aussi eu sa part de blessure l’an dernier, souffrant de 2 blessures à l’aine.
Personnellement, je crois toujours que Price est, même si je n’aime pas le dire, fini et destine à rester sur la liste des blessés à long-terme et que le plan est que Montembeault soit le second d’Allen. Espérons que l’organisation a appris et ne surtaxera pas Allen, son utilisation à répétition dans une cause perdue l’an dernier a fort probablement contribuée à ses blessures. Pour l’instant, on n’en sait pas plus que ce qu’on savait à la fin de la saison sur l’état du genou de Price parce qu’il est impossible d’en avoir le cÅ“ur net tant qu’il ne retournera pas sur la glace pour tester sérieusement celui-ci. L’entraînement hors glace n’est pas un problème avec son genou amoché mais c’est quand il est sur la glace à faire les nombreux mouvements que la position de gardien commande que l’inflammation revient. à mon sens, il y avait des indices que ça sentait la fin l’an dernier dans sa façon de se comporter ; saluer ses enfants en plein jeu sur la glace et ses déclarations à la fin de l’année comme de quoi il avait amorcé le dernier match comme s’il s’agissait de son dernier match en carrière. Si c’est le cas au final, le parcours miraculeux de l’équipe jusqu’à la finale de la Coupe en 2021 aura eu raison de 2 grandes carriers et non pas d’une seule en plus de faire tomber les 2 piliers de fondation des Canadiens de Marc Bergevin.
